With the sudden surge of dying PS3's (many of my friends PS3's have died over that past couple of months) I've decided I need to backup a bit more often.

I've made a few backup's in the past using the backup option on the PS3 which basically copies an image of the HD to a USB device.

In the event of my PS3 dying I'd probably just buy a new one, what I'm wondering is if the backup could be restored to a new PS3 as I've read that data may be tied to your original PS3 by may of Motherboard match ?

If this is the case is the only option to manually copy game saves etc to a USB device?

Some things such as protected saves cant be backup normally, but all your PSN content can be re-downloaded with ease. When ive done a back up ive taken anything like photos/vids/music i have saved and deleted them from the PS3, much the same with demos. This makes the backup process far easier, the best way would be to get your PS3 working and do a data transfer to a new PS3 using an ethernet cable.
