PS3 Backward Compatibility Question

Howdy, been looking at getting a PS3 for a while (despite the rather boring range of games at the moment... but I have faith in the future that there will be enough AAA titles to warrant the purchase).

I probably wont buy it for a few months yet, but I'm concerned about backwards compatibility.

I notice that the 40GB version is the only version left on sale in the UK and it isn't backwards compatible with PS2 games, but is it compatible with PS1 games?

On a side note, are Sony actually sorting out the rumble in the pads?

Ah cool thanks for that guys. I think I'll wait for a while due and pick one up when I've got some spare cash, hopefully there will be rumble by then
