Don't get your hopes up though, they're only doing it for singstar just now. This does however mean they're adding BC software to the PS3. No official word on the other games they're planning to work with the BC software though.

David Reeves said:
PS2 SingStar games will run on PS3 without the need of a PS3 SingStar. Firmware update required.

They are looking at giving more titles and/or franchises the SingStar treatment.

Or it mean's their releasing the base software from PS3 Singstar for free which allows you to put in your PS2 singstar discs and read the songs off it, so there's not actually any emulation taking place at all.

edit:

Sorry to **** on everyone's parade but it's not emulation at all. The original source (which the OP decided not to link, how odd) is Dutch and a complete mistranslation happened. What it actually is, is the Singstar PS3 using a 'disc swap' feature that lets you put the PS2 game in, and the PS3 will play the songs on that, with the PS3 version of Singstar. There's nothing about playing PS2 games on the PS3 via software emulation here.

We'll see, I'm just saying there's a lot easier ways to get PS2 Singstar's working than through emulation.

It's also from a German interview so I wouldn't be surprised if the second part is a misquote or misunderstanding, especially since they don't mention any other games specifically.

I need to stop getting excited when I see threads mentioning rumors that the (40Gb + newer) PS3 may have backwards compatibility at some uncertain point in the future.
