Sony has made another bad decision regarding the PlayStation 3. Claims have been running rampant that this console would be able to play both PS2 and PSOne games—it still will be able to, but require an additional adapter that will likely cost a kidney or two.

To use saved data on a PlayStation 2 memory card, you must copy the data onto a virtual memory card within the hard disk. This requires a PS2/PSone memory card adaptor to copy the data to your PLAYSTATION 3. A memory card adaptor is designed to edit, up/download game saves to and from EMS flash card or smart media card.

More money to fork out i see..... :(

are you saying that the adapter you need to play ps one / two games is the memory card adapter, or a seperate thing?

iirc i read a report the sony are basically making ps3's with ps2s in them to make them backwards compatable

Are you sure that you can't just save to the HDD? I was under the impression that this was only if you wish to use existing saved games.

op has got it all muddled

ps3 can be backwards compatible out of the box
works like xbox 360, you can save new saves with ps2 games onto the new hard drive
to get old saves you can buy an adapter to transfer old saves from a memory card

this is how stupid rumours start

"Cost a kidney or two" - it will most likely be be either a USB adapter or something like a small device that lets you transfer old memory card data to a Memory Stick. i.e. not expensive.

The 360's HDD and wireless adaptor are pretty standard pieces of kit, didn't stop MS slapping relatively big price tags on them though (for what they are).

Seems this adaptor is just for transferring save games then. Don't know how long its been in development, but it strikes me as Sony looking at anything the 360 can't/doesn't do and trying to get one up on MS.

I don't think it's a big deal at all. I doubt I'll want to use my old saves that much but I can still play all my old games without it.

What's wrong with "Sony looking at anything the 360 can't/doesn't do and trying to get one up on MS" ?. They seem to be trying to differentiate their product from Microsoft's product - to attract customers. Releasing their console later, allows them to do this and is the way in which they will obtain market share. Microsoft chose to release first and therefore obtained the market of customers looking for the first current-generation console.

If Sony released an exact copy of Microsoft's XBox 360 (bar the badge on the front) - there wouldn't be much choice between them - and you might as well flip a coin to decide which badge you went with.

Why are you not equally accusing Nintendo of "trying to get one up on MS", with, for example, the plans they have for the controllers, with the WII ?

I would have quite happily paid for something to keep my old xbox saves so I could use them on the 360. Instead I just ended up selling all my old xbox games bar 2 :(

More choice imo not more money you have to shell out.

The wireless adaptor is actually one of the best on the market in terms of connectivity.

Most wireless dongles work on 802.11b or 802.11g or both. This does 802.11b 802.11g & 802.11a. Meaning it can connect to any network available. 802.11a network parts seem to be a little more expencive.
So when you look at the functionality of the product you realise you are getting good value for money. I mean the Netgear gaming addaptor was retailing at about £76 (but could be found for £46.) and that does not do the 802.11a or the 802.11b bands.

Ok as far as I can tell the HDD is overpriced but we may be paying for content not just the hardware. :dunno:

Edit: I am fairly annoyed that there is no easy way for my xbox games to get onto my 360 so TBH if I bought a PS3 I would probably eventually buy an adaptor to get my PS2 and PS1 games over.

I read about this a few days back, and its complete nonsense. Poor journalism attempting at taking a dig, as its fashionable, at Sony.

So the PS3 is offering a way, even if it will cost, for you to transfer PS2 saves to the PS3? Good on Sony, as MS missed the boat with that one.

I have a 360, Ive never owned a Playstation and wont buy the new one, but I wont bash a console just because I wont buy it.

Xbox360 can also take xbox1 saves but you need the XSATA device and a PC , maybe a tad more expensive than just an adapter that just required for PS2, but it can be done nonetheless
