Am I correct in thinking a "phat" PS3 can play MP4 AC-3 files via Toslink (when set to bitstream via the XMB) and have full 5.1 surround sound?
I'm pretty sure the general consensus is that the PS3 cannot play MP4 with AC-3 sound but if the AC-3 is sent via bitstream (rather than linear PCM) then the amp is decoding it and the bandwidth available over a Toslink is enough to carry it? (I understand it that Toslink cannot transfer AC-3 via linear PCM as there is not enough available bandwidth, whereas bitstream is less demanding?)
Or is it just the case that the PS3 doesn't support MP4 with AC-3 and so cannot bitstream it or convert it to linear PCM?
Thanks!
