PS3 Blu-ray playback Vs £500+ Blu-ray player?

I'd take a standalone player over a console any day. Consoles are loud, hot and clunky. I tried bluray playback on an Xbox 1 I picked up, it was awful compared to the Oppos I had at the time.

You know i only ever owned a ps3 for bluray playback (well, two of them; an original 60gb and a slim) and i never thought that about either of them. But really, hot is an excuse? if it works, doesnt matter all that much to me. Pretty much nothing runs hotter than my av amp anyway :o

I use my ps4 (or sometimes xbox one) and would say both of them are fine for film watching, i have my volume around -35db and i cant hear the consoles from 3 metres away. The only downside is using the controllers instead of a remote.

A ps3 is like £50 it's not fair to compare it to a standalone blu ray player costing £500+.

IMO though you should only buy a £500+ blu ray player if everything else in your chain is priced accordingly. no point having a £500+ player for a £2000 setup. you would need like a proper £10K setup IMO minimum for you to see any benefit over a PS3 and that is if there is any which IMO there won't as it's all digital signals.

it's like DAC's and AMP's.

no point spending £500 on a DAC for £20 headphones.

Are you comparing it to a 4K player at that price point? At its core of playing standard blu Ray discs there will be little or no difference, technology is moving so quickly now that in part you're paying for a build quality that isn't really needed, features that may not be needed, connections that may not be needed. Economies of scale play a big part too as there will be a midrange player where image quality won't differ as you go up in price just the above points I made.

I attempted to use my PS3 as a blu ray player and it got so loud it rivalled the hoover! Obviously no use as a Blu-ray player but it was one of the early 40gb models! I since purchased a high endish (at the time) Panasonic standalone player and found that the ps3 loaded just as quickly and the picture looked the same to my (admittedly untrained) eye.

Yuppers.

OP, the image and audio quality from any modern Blu-ray player will be the same. Don't spend five or ten times as much on a player just to reduce the noise from the spinning disc .

newer PS3's are silent, newer PS4's even more so.

picture should be identical as it's all digital. there may be a slight difference but IMO most people would never notice it even those with trained eyes. built in processing on high end standalone players manipulating the picture.

im guessing you currently have a PS3 and are wondering if there's anything to gain by upgrading. Quick answer is no. Far better to spend cash on room treatment or screen with a projector. You will see far more improvement in contrast and colour rendition
