PS3 bluray board

I have a ps3 with a bluray board fault, i know its the board as i used the laser out of it in a different machine.
I have always been told that if the board dies the machine is unusable as the board is linked to the ps3, is this true?
is there anyway to repair the board or use a different board?

this is my understanding, although i never tested it. since you seem to have access to a 2nd ps3 try swapping the board and check

from my experience the boards are linked to each other, which is the same sort of thing as the microsoft x-box, aparantly those are linked too, but i cant gaurantee the xbox one as i refuse to fix them
