Is the Blu-Ray video playback from PS3 full 1080, and progressive? Someone told me it's 1080i, although could have been with earlier PS3 firmware.

Has anyone compared BR playback against dedicated BR players?

It's only 1080p if you have a TV that does 1080p and connect with a HDMI cable. The discs themselves are full 1920x1080p (usually 24fps).

General consensus (from revews and word of mouth) seems to be that the PS3 is one of the best Blu-ray players currently available (considering its overall price).

Blu Rays do output at 1080p on the PS3, and do look very good. But, the overall 'wow' effect is starting to wear off for me now, I tend to notice the difference more when viewing non HD content rather than the HD content itself.

There is little difference on well made HD discs I agree - but the significant difference in non-hd material is staggering on a decent screen

Sound is better in HD also with the full works (although a costly option I grant you) and this is where BR makes it up, I watched (and was blown away by the visuals) on Transformers last night, but the sound was just as good as a decent DVD didnt sound as gob smacking as some really decent audio tracks to my ears
