Well I have a 5 day old 80gb ps3 and it seems to give off an intermittent clicking noise, it sounds like hdd access noise but it's quite audible if its a bit quiet and durations vary. Apart from the noise nothing seems to be wrong, just wanted to check if it's normal.

Not normal imo. I sit about 6 feet away from the unit, and never hear HDD access. In games it would be hard to tell, but in XMB I would have notcied clicking when browsing/viewing files.

My original 60gb made no noise and *** 320GB I put in there, makes none either (from 6 feet away).

hmmm it's only occasional that's the thing, i played a few hours yesterday and didnt hear it once, turned it on this morning and heard it for a min or so then it stopped. I've read it can be the plastic inside expanding due to heat which would explain it as it was fairly cold this morning.

My 3 day old ps3 makes clicking noises. Sounds like the disc searching or the hdd. I thought it was normal.

Happens more at the initial load up of games.

I read on another forum a guy had a similar noise with his 80gb, got it replaced and the same occurred with the new one so seems to be a normal thing =/

Edit: Ps3 on atm no noise just the quiet whir of the fans, probably me just being paranoid for no reason.

*sadface* Just rang up the store I bought mine from and just my luck they're out of stock =( The guy I rang said to try Sony but I'd rather get it swapped straight.

Update: Got it replaced at a non-local store which had stock. Good news is that the new one is noticeably quieter and I noticed when packing the old one away that the fan rattled a bit when picking it up. The new one doesn't do that at all which makes me think the internal fan had a bearing loose on the one I replaced.

After listening to that youtube clip my knocking noise doesn't sound like that and nothing is loose when i pick it up though. I really just think its the HDD messing around.

Good to see you got a nice simple replacement though :)

Indeed my local one were out of stock so rang another and they put one aside for me as a replacement as they had only 2 in stock which had been delivered this morning.

I got the 80 GB version yesterday and it clicks too. Just one single click from time to time. Click! :p

It's the HDD, and I wouldn't worry aboout it. I've heard that before, especially in laptops with the same 2.5" drives.

When I swapped my HDD for a 250GB model, that clicked every now and then too. I really don't think it's anything to worry about, some people scaremonger/fret about anything :/

I can tell you mine definitely wasn't hdd seek noise, as I said I think the internal fan was loose as my replacement doesn't make the clicking noise :D

My ps3 is silent most of the time but sometimes when the blu-ray drive is being used a lot (installing games) you can hear a faint click as the laser moves long distances at speed

Yep, mine clicks a fair bit when loading games up for the first time, from what I can tell it's the disc drive-doubt it's a problem, and I figure that if it is I can get it replaced under the warranty when the problem manifests itself!
