Talked to someone today who claims you can install a codec pack on the PS3 and it'll play RM, MOV, MKV etc

is this true?

Slap said person, he's a fibber. Unless he means install them within a linux install on the PS3? Even then it won't play HD movie files.

I would kill to play true .mkv

Has that been patched in yet or is it still causing them a headache. If I remember rightly .mkv playback is required to be classed as DivX certified so either they add the support or they drop the certification.

If the PS3 could play MKV files from a DVD disc or from its HDD, I would make sweet love to it.

Maybe they meant on the linux side of things, not possible on the PS3 native OS until Sony release an official update to support those formats.

Have you tried it? A number of people claim to have H.264 1080p files playing in Linux.

Windows 7 x86 + DivX Tech Preview = True .mkv streaming on to 360.

Haven't tried it on PS3, cba to get it back out of box.

x64 support coming 'soon' (as of 24/07/09)

Edit: Even if there was native .mkv support, I think my smallest .mkv file is just shy of 9GB and the largest just over 22GB. Kind of fails before you can say 'FAT32'

Files over 4GB can be copied in full over a network. The PS3 does not use FAT32 for its internal file system.

And it's still easy enough to split them into parts if you have to use an external drive.

After upgrading to quad core my computer tears through 720p mkv files far faster than is required, i can even fast forward at 2x and it keeps up! I really have no need for mkv support on the PS3 as my PC is more than capable of transcoding them anyway.

I was hoping firmware 3.00 would address this but evidently it won't be.

Ok, fair comment. It's not a huge deal converting them this way. But not everyone has a fast PC to do this with and not ALL MKV's will be as easy to convert.

MKV2VOB will remux MKV's into a different container that can be read by the PS3, but some files require a complete re-encode, both audio and video...this takes an age, even on a quad core.

People have been asking for MKV support as long as I can remember. This and in game voice chat are probably the most wanted PS3 features and Sony have yet to listen to their user base. It stinks.

I think it's got more to do with memory limitations of the OS (for voice chat) and licensing issues than it does 'ignoring the users'. Hold yer horses until the next Divx licence comes out that supports mkv natively in windows 7, if Sony want to keep that pretty divx logo on the box they'd need to then add support for it.

I just wish they would say something about both features. There is no denying Sony knows these are in demand.

On another note...I would love to see SMB shares and HFS file system support for external devices added. Media shares are all well and good but I'd like to move some films from the PS3 back to the PC to create some space but this is just not possible at the moment if the files are over 4GB in size.

One other thing...does anyone know if they have been messing about with the temperature thresholds for the built in cooling fan? I'm yet to be convinced that the 'weather' is causing my PS3 to now sound like a hair dryer. The last place I lived was FAR hotter then back up north and I never had any issues.

Dust?

Kol - I thought so at first. But since my PS3 is out of warranty I thought I'd take it apart.

It wasn't dusty at all. A 'fine' layer on some of the more exposed internal parts but nothing you could say would cause it to over heat.

Stripped it right down to the mainboard. Cleaned it all up and applied Arctic Silver 5 this time to see if it would help. But nothings changed.
