anyone have any tips for streaming HD x264 encoded movies to the PS3? I thought that the latest firmware supported x264 but my PS3 doesn't seem to recognise the format. Do I need to change the codec?

TVersity converts on the fly doesn't it? Are there any settings I need to make this happen or does it "just work"?

"only" got a 37" plasma so 1080P is a bit pointless anyway even if it can handle the input.
Are the 85Mbps homeplugs fast enough to handle 720P x264 files or am I better spending more and getting the 200Mbps ones? Wireless just ain't cutting it unless I'm streaming mp3's or low quality divx.

downloaded MKV2VOB to give it a try. Any preference on which output extension to use and the transcoding codec for x264 .mkv files?
Why does it seem to want to re-encode the DTS audio to AC3? PS3's can handle DTS.

I presume you've got Matroska MKV files? They'll have to be converted to VOB (using MKV2VOB) or streamed with TVersity.

ok I've converted one movie into .vob using MKV2VOB but the PS3 doesn't even see it on the media server. Do I only use .vob if I'm copying the file to disk?

Apparently MKV2VOB isnt the prefered application anymore. Try TsRemux and see if you have better sucess.

I'll give that a try but what file format should I be aiming for if I want to stream it to the PS3. Like I said, the PS3 doesn't even see .vob files unless I'm doing something wrong.

will give that a try tonight. A mate says that he uses mpeg2 through MKV2VOB which I don't think I've tried yet. mp4 and .vob don't seem to be picked up over the network. Would mpeg2 screw up the quality of the H264?

i'm presuming you fell foul of the same thing i did. Not adding the programme you're streaming it with to the windows firewall exception rules

when you enable media sharing in WMP 11 it doesnt do this by default, nor does it prompt you to. It tells you to in the instructions, but heh, instructions are for wimps !

would that be just media player or the network sharing service as well? Also I seem to recall there being a media extender program in the firewall settings though the PS3 is not technically an extender if my understanding is correct?

Very much so, not to mention very long re-encode times!

So if I want to stream (not copy to DVD or the internal HDD) an x264 .mkv file from the PC to the PS3, what video and audio settings should I use in MKV2VOB (or similar) to make the file readable by the PS3 over the network and be able to stream it via 85mbps homeplugs without choppiness or losing too much of the quality?

Am I asking too much from the PS3? Should I have built a media centre instead?
