It looks like the PS3's suffering major compatibility problems with PS2 games even though it's got most of a PS2 physically built into the box. It's got to be debatable how much of this can be fixed as most of what's going on with the ps2 emulation is in hardware and not software...

Hmm, the 360 had problems too :p, Everything has problems tbh.

The difference here is that the PS3 has PS2 hardware (Emotion Engine + Graphics Synthesisor) built into the motherboard to handle it. The 360's backwards compatibility is done purely as emulation.

Sony were originally saying that they were doing it all by software emulation too... until news leaked out a few months ago that they couldn't achieve it had were going to include the PS2 chipset in hardware. Although if it is eventually achieved the PS2 hardware will be removed from the PS3.

Yeah how big is the PS2 library?? People want every one to work perfectly?
Dude, I don't think the PS2 worked with all the games in it's library either :p.

@Wrathmon, not everything has the same problems ;).

Even though it still does have the hardware it isn't a PS2 or PS. The library is massive on those 2 machines, and reading through ElRazur's post nothing seems critical.

Oh look, another Sony "we can do things better on backwards compatibility claim"

yet fail to live upto its hype.

they never said they would have 100% compatibility

A few issues are probably to be expected, but I would be surprised if the PS3 doesn't make a better fist of BC than the 360 does - because of its PS2 hardware on board. The 360 doesn't even emulate half of Xbox1 games - at all. MS seemed to lose interest in BC about five minutes after they got the console out the door.

AT the Sony press conference they did

reports that the PS3 will be "100% backwards compatible," and that "all legacy titles played on the system will be displayed at high-definition resolutions," similar to the Xbox 360's BC upscaling (but hopefully without the profile downloading)

of ourse things change but for the ps3 to have the chip in it required to play ps2 games its a poor show IMHO that there still seems to be so many issue's with backwards compatibilies that so many people have complained about that was/is lacking with the 360 which is simply done by emulation

Well i was never aware they said that they would all be playable at launch. its been known for months now about GH2 not working on the PS3.

Anyway all the issues will be easily updated with a firmware update. Remember all the problems the very select few xbox games that where playable on the 360 had. HL2 with floating barrels etc, took about 4 months to get a fix.

They probably will do better though, don't you think? :) Having PS2 hardware on board, it would be surprising if BC didn't work better than on the 360 wouldn't it?

I don't get the fevered eagerness of some people here to say 'I told you so' and who cannot wait for any piece of (real or perceived) bad news about the PS3 so they can make a big song and dance about it :)

Fini Ive been told by a freind that the PS3 is also compatable with the XBox 360 games, I don't belive him.
