I currently use wirless for my ps3 and the speed is pretty crap as my router is upstairs, i would like to have it hard wired but my dilema is the cable needs to go outside along the front of the house and then into my office at the back of the house.

Im guessing about 20meters in length would do fine, is cat6 cable the answer, what sort of cable would i need as i have read about crossover and patch and is it best to wire the cable into a telephone wall socket from the master socket or just directly plug it into my router from the ps3.

Can you get external cat6 cable???, i thought about homeplugs but i would prefer to have it wired, any help would be much appreciated as i have no idea really what i need to do, my ps3 is downstairs in my lounge but i have to keep my router in my office, again, any help would be much appreciated.

I just run a 15m ethernet cable straight to router, works fine for my brother in law.

I would have thought that the cable would be fine for external, although im not an electrician so dont quote me.

Yes you can get cable designed for being outside - it just has a slightly thicker plastic surround to help prevent weathering. You can use Cat5 or Cat6, won't make much difference really for what you are using it for. You can either crimp the end into a RJ45 plug or wire it into a face plate if you want a box on the wall (you then have a short length of cable to the PS3 from here).

Best to go to your local electric wholesaler or similar.

if your going from ps3 straight to router then straight through is best
if your doing a face box at ether end still i would use a straight through cable as u would hopefully mabye have the box as 1-1 2-2 3-3 4-4 and so on so basicly that would act as a extension cable for the two cables plus staright through cables are 1-1 and so on :)
crossover cables are needed for say conecting 2 pcs together without the aid of a router or awitch I.E 2 pcs and crossover cable only

I'm going to do the same for my PS3 although for me the run is only around 7m. I'm going to use cat5e cable and I'm planning on putting it in some black pvc sleeving that you can buy from any electrical wholesaler. Am planning on burying most of the cable in the ground as I'm soon to have my front driveway redone and have the exposed bits in the pvc sleeving just for extra protection.

Does not answer my question though, crossover or patch cable??

You don't need a crossover cable. The router will be doing that part for you.
You only need a crossover cable when for example, you are connecting 2 PC's together for a LAN game.

Just a bog standard CAT5 network cable would be fine. I did the exact same thing as you are asking, although I had it running through a plastic pipe on the outside wall, with 2 90 degree plumbers bends on either end.
