I have a Dualshock 3 controller which I have used less than half a dozen times. The L1 + R1 buttons and the triggers occasionally stop working. I've had the controller in bits and everything seems fine, tested continuity through the circuit of the buttons.

Is there a common fault with these and do Sony offer any kind of warranty for them? I bought it off an auction site about 6 months ago.

Seems silly to spend another £30 on replacing a like-new controller! :(

Where you went wrong^^

Trade it in on the high street for £22, and buy a new one. Easiest route.

It was brand new, sealed and genuine though!

I didn't know they were worth that much for a trade-in though, how much for a Sixaxis?

Are you sure it was genuine? There were a lot of fake ones doing the rounds that were quite hard to tell apart from the real thing, even the packaging was pretty close.

Yes it's absolutely identical to another DS3 I've used, internals are 'genuine' too.

I have two DS3's, the first one started suffering from a 'hanging' X-button and the 2nd one is already starting to suffer from a loose left analog stick

Both have working L1/R1 buttons though.
