PS3 data transfer

No, the PC will not recognize the filesystem.

I think maybe there is a small chance with a Linux system or another 'special' OS/Filesystem but it isn't easy at all if not impossible.

Both Linux and Windows don't see the drive. Connecting it to a PC alters the drive's signature then the PS3 refuses to accept it as valid and formats the drive. I've made this mistake once, didn't have a backup :(

just chuck another disc in there in its place like an audio CD or something?

I tried doing this but its very hard to get the posts on the arms properly aligned and hold a disc to the upper part of the mechanism as you put it together. I ended up moving the gears at the bottom of the mechanism till it was in an empty position then putting the top part of the mechanism back on as the posts line up in a more "relaxed" position, then tested it by inserting a disc (not all the way) once you have it right the two wheel arms should move up as you insert the disc and it should start moving the long arm on one side as it goes further in*.
If you want to be really sure, insert the drive into the ps3 before replacing the outer metal case and leave the top of the ps3 off to test it so you can see it in operation and you aren't repeatedly taking that metal case off (easily stripable screws)

aside: (*this long arm then moves the two counter acting black bars on the sides to move the two posts at the bottom that prevent insertion of a new disc and then eventually a final post causes the two arms that hold the magnetic locking disc up to move apart and the disc jumps down, holding the disc onto the spindle. I've probably left something out as well...)

Ok cheers for everyone's input.

Change of plan....

Assuming I don't need the driver working to access the XMB? I'm just going to do the reflow to access the HDD and get my data off then kick it down the road.

Sounds like far to much hassle messing about with the drive to get it working so I'll just leave it broken for now.

Don't be put off by me waffling, actually getting it back into the open position was fairly easy, you just wind a white gear till the two posts drop down and the left hand side black bar (looking at it from above with the slot at the front) has disengaged* from the gear next to it, then you can more easily put the top back on with the levers on the top part of the case in the right position.

*this may look "wrong" but what happens is that one of the arms the disc pushes on as it goes in moves this bar back down which then makes the posts pop up as the disc goes in.

oops, waffling again...

Backup the savegames to a USB stick or external drive, replace the internal drive, re-download the games off the PSN and restore the savegames.

If the savegames are protected and cannot be coopied to a USB stick the only way is to do a full backup, this can be quite a big file.
