PS3 - Divx support out of the box?

From my own research, it appears not.

Any movie files have to be of MPEG-4 or H.264 variety and contained within an MP4 container. It won't play .divx or .avi and you can't cheat by renaming them as .mp4.

However, there is supposed to be additional codec support arriving in future firmware updates - maybe this European launch firmware will incorporate this.

In the imterim, theres a good transcode tool called PSP Video 9 that will do all the coding, file naming and copying over to the PSP if you have a USB lead to connect to your PC. Give it a google, its freeware.

There is also a transcode program called PS3 video 9, built by the same people as PSP video 9 but designed with the codecs for the PS3 in mind.

PS3 runs Linux out the box, no? Surely you can use something like MythTV or mplayer to play just about anything?

you have to install it yourself but i believe its very easy to do

then can use VLC player or something im guessing
