PS3 doesn't ship with a HDMI cable

I'm guessing it comes with a component cable. Which is a bit daft as atm there are no tv's on the market than can handle 1080p over component.

So 95% of users will be 'stuck' with 720p or 1080i... hmmm. sounds familiar.

What has not been confirmed yet is wether or not the cheaper version will allow you to buy an extra peripheral to have HDMI output. This doesn't matter *too* much, as the component output will output all the same resolutions and standards that HDMI can.

Clicking on the "What is the difference" link it lists
The difference between them, however, is that the $599 version system includes HDMI**, Memory Stick/SD/CompactFlash slots, WiFi***

Then goes on to say
**HDMI cable not included

This says to me that there's no HMDI functionality for the $499 version at all. Ergo. no 1080p as long as there's no tv's that support it over component.

Imo though, this is no great loss as 720p/1080i is more than adequate for the majority of people.

but it does say that it can output 1080p....so how will this happen witout HDMI? can u do it via component?>

Officially you can do that over component but there are very few tvs that can take a signal this way.
