Hi

I have not really used my PS3 much but today I turned it on to watch a DVD. I put the DVD in but all I get is a spinning logo in the top right hand corner. I have tried a couple of DVDs but I get the same problem. I have tried a system restore but that does not seem to fix the problem .

Is there something stupid that I might be doing or should I get on the phone to Sony?

If it's a 40GB per chance these are known to have failing lasers.

If other things work, games, blu rays etc. it may be something else.

Send it to Sony and they shall give you a new replacement!

I can't be sure but if there is the spinning logo it means that the drive knows a disk is there, in all the cases i have heard of the drive won't even recognise that a disk is there,

However what you are saying does sound similar to the ps2 disk read error, if it continues get in touch with sony as their returns dept. is excellent

Not sure if this is any help but it is all i have

40Gb yup :(

I dont have any PS3 games handy so could not try one.

I did put in a PS2 game which I know wont work but it should pick it up? and give me an error message.

And right before MGS4!

Yep sounds like the drive has gone :(

Get onto Sony and you should find a brand new replacement arriving to your doorstep within 2-3 days, so don't worry about missing out on MGS4 :D

yeah i hear sony customer service is supposidly really not bad, compared to some, matts 360 has been gone for weeks, RROD, sent for repair and its still not back

I'm sure if Sony were getting tons of them sent back they would be providing harsh waiting times for replacements too.

That's the difference tho, Sony don't ask you to send the console back they just send a courier to your door delivering a new one and to collect your faulty console. Whether a higher number of replacements would change this I don't know but I would have thought they would have the option of using different multiple couriers if this happened?

Well from experience I luckily only had to replace my old 360's within their twelve month period so just got them swapped by the retailers, where as with my PS3 I phoned them on the Saturday and had a new one delivered to me on the Wednesday and they offered me delivery for the Tuesday but I wasn't around so asked them for the Wednesday which for me was less hassle than taking it to the retailer :)

Had the same thing happen to my launch day PS3. Sony were really good even though it was a week out of warranty they sent a courier to my door with a refurb model which was as new and pristine in every way, no scratches, no dust etc etc.

Its pot luck really but it seems a bad batch of bluray lasers are out there.

yeah i had the same prob - mine was from hk so warranty didnt cover it to be repaired in uk. i ordered a replacment lens from ebay with the tray attached for £35 delivered. i did the repair myself using a pdf file i got off the net and a video on youtube. it wasnt that difficult to do only took 45 mins from start to finish.
