I bought 'Heat' too, but when I play that, the picture fills the whole screen.
I played Casino on stardard crt and dvd player and it appears with black bands on top and bottom.

Any ideas?

as you can see my nice digram doesnt display.....

casino displays with black bands on top and bottom AND at the sides too!

most films are shot in a ratio that is even wider and thinner than a widescreen TV. hence on any given movie, if watched in the correct ratio will always have a black border top and bottom

they had some "anamorphic" tech but i havent got a clue about that.

basically if it is filling the screen its probably stretching the image in some way or other.

I don't watch DVD's on my PS3, but i know this happens when i watch some MP4's
Have you tried pressing the triangle, then there is an icon 'Screen mode' every time you press this it cycles 'Normal, full screen, zoom and original' that fixes the problem on MP4's try that with the DVD's

your TV (CRT or LCD widescreen) is 1.85:1 and the DVD is 2.35:1 so the black bars are normal and are meant to be there.

He said there are black bars on the side also.
Ah, I should have read better.
To the OP, have a look at upscaling options on the PS3, looks like they are not correct in some way, then again that should affect all DVD or is Casino Royale on Blu-Ray?

IIRC You have to set the DVD upscaling options to Full Screen. At work at the mo so can't remember the manu path to the setting (I think the other options are to have it off, or maintain source aspect or something like that)

Thx

Update

Yes, upscale Fullscreen stretches the picture <- -> to fill the sides. This distorts the picture making people seem fat. This can be resolved by going into the TV settings and pressing Zoom, which stretches the picture ^ up and down.

BTW, i was talking about the greasy italian Casino, not the blue eyed secret agent one.

unless the ratio of the film matches your tv its its always going to either have the black bars or have to be stretched ( wich makes people look wider or taller depending on which way )

youl have to use the zoom/fullscreen thing

It depends on what aspect ratio the film was shot in..

Either 2:35 - 1 Which means you'll have black bars on the top and bottom

Or 16:9 which will fill the whole screen. Cos all widescreen tv's are 16:9

2:35 - 1 meaning the film is 2:35 times the lengh of the 1...

Your other DVD player is setup incorrectly. It's set to full screen which zooms in on the picture, basically meaning you are not getting the whole picture as the director intended.

I personally prefer 2:35-1 movies as the panoramic feel of widescreen has more impact.. Of course if you have a pissy sized TV then it's perhaps not so good.

I always stretch or crop 2.35:1 movies, thank god my tv has those options built into it, I hate it when movies don't have pan and scan options on them. I didn't get a widescreen tv to have black bars on it and see some unimportant video right at the edge when all the action happens in the middle of the screen anyway.
