I thought the DVD playback was region locked? I used to own a NTSC PS3 and it didn't play PAL DVD's. I just recently got myself a PAL PS3 and this one plays both NTSC and PAL DVD's.

I'm kinda confused myself. Anyone care to explain whats going on. I'm scared.

Just tried a few JP DVD's I own. Yup, worked fine.

It seems my PS3 can play all DVD regions.

My 60gb USA NTSC PS3 could only play Region 1 DVDs.

My 40gb UK PAL PS3 can play region 1,2 & 3. (tested so far)

nice

japanese dvd region is region 2 same as the uk. so it should play ;)

as for region 3 what disc was it as i remember reading something about some discs are labled witha region but are set to region 0 (multi region)

Just tried "My Name Is Earl Season 3 Boxset" DVD which I imported on the bay. Its ntsc as its says on the box. Plays fine on my pal PS3.

Just loaded the DVD using Gspot and its confirms the disc to be in NTSC region 1.

My PS3's fan just kicked into over drive. :( Sounds louder than my PC or an xbox 360. Only started when I made the discovery it plays NTSC DVD's.

I think its cursed... over overheating, its really hot in my room.

Just found this info.

SD DVD - Region 4 PAL & Region 0 PAL & Region 0 NTSC
Bluray - Region B

US PS3
SD DVD - Region 1 NTSC & Region 0 NTSC
Bluray - Region A

Jap PS3
SD DVD - Region 2 NTSC & Region 0 NTSC
Bluray - Region A

HK PS3 & SG PS3
SD DVD - Region 3 NTSC & Region 0 NTSC & Region 0 PAL
Bluray - Region A

UK PS3
SD DVD - Region 2 PAL & Region 0 PAL & Region 0 NTSC
Bluray - Region B

hmm. I'm pretty sure the Earl dvd box set is Region 1 as its imported from the states.

Copied and pasted the below from here

Tried it myself and it works.

Download this

Put in the disc of Earl firstly.

When you open ifoedit, you then hit open ifo and have it point to the
VIDEO_TS.ifo file of the movie you want to know about. Once it is open look on
the top window and you will see a line called "VMGM_MAT (its the first choice),
click it once and on the bottom screen it tells what region it is e.g region 1 en.abled. If it
is region free it will list a few regions.

I used Gspot to see what region the discs were. So, far my PS3 is playing anything I throw at it. I don't have any USA Blu-Rays to try though.

Hey,

I have 2 PS3's - launch 60GB (CECHC) and a 40GB (CECHG). Neither of them play my Region 1 Samurai Jack DVD's :( I had to rip them, remove the region lock and re-burn them to DVD+R9 discs, which then played back fine.

The easy way to check the region is to just look for the tiny globe symbol on the disc itself... the number indicates the region :)

They may well have region-unlocked the consoles in a recent firmware update? I'll give it a go when I get back home.

Cheers,

Su

Guys, NTSC and PAL are not regions! They're video formats. PS3 and the vast majority or modern TV's offer full support for both formats.

It's the region of the DVD which determines whether or not you can play it. It's perfectly possible to have a Region 0 NTSC disc which will work. If you could double check the actual region codes (via the method I suggested, or via software), that would be helpful ;)

Cheers,

Su
