PS3 DVD playback question.

It's the region of the DVD which determines whether or not you can play it. It's perfectly possible to have a Region 0 NTSC disc which will work. If you could double check the actual region codes (via the method I suggested, or via software), that would be helpful ;)

Cheers,

Su

Trust me; it isn't. I have a Region 2 PS3 which is NTSC and it wont play Region 2 PAL DVD's. It specifically mentions that it is PAL. I have it hooked up to a TV which supports all formats.

Loaded up "Metal Gear Solid: Bande Dessinée" which I imported from Asia. I used ifoedit to look at the region code. Heres what it displays. This DVD works fine on my PS3. Funny thing is, it didn't work on my US PS3 when I had it.

It wouldn't work on your US PS3 though as it's Region 2? It should work on your UK one though because it is the correct region (and as Sumanji pointed out it's the region that matters not the format it's in).

Out of interest have you tried playing any PAL PS1 games downloaded from the PS Store on your PS3? If so do they work or does it complain about PAL for those as well.

I've read before of people with NTSC machines being unable to play PAL games, so perhaps the same applys for DVD's as well in this case.

Seem's strange though, as far as I understand things it should only be the region that limits you (provided your player can output NTSC and PAL formats and your TV receive them).

I downloaded a few PAL PS1 games when I had my US PS3 and had no problems playing them.

btw, the Earl dvd's I have are NTSC region free. Still doesn't explain why the MGS DVD works as its Region 2 NTSC which the PAL PS3 doesn't support.

Sorry, I was referring that to Strife212 as he has PS3 which specifically refuses to play PAL DVDs so I was interested to know if this persisted beyond DVDs.

There's no mystery here as has been explained numerous times already... UK is region 2, your disc is region 2, so it should play.
The only thing that is odd is that NTSC-J region 2 PS3 doesn't play region 2 discs encoded in PAL... but that could well be a hardware/software limitation of that particular PS3 model.
