I got a 40gb PAL PS3 few weeks ago (refurbished) and now the fans are maxing out. Sounds louder than my PC and its really annoying. Does the PS3's fans kick in if the room temp is too high? The fans only go to max after the PS3 has been on for 15-20 minutes. The system itself doesn't feel like its over heating.

Will I have to send it back?

Give a good spray of compressed air into it and make sure there is enough room for a good intake and a open place for the heat to go out at the back.

Also try Googling the 40GB 'fan test'.

When I had mine it was pretty random as to when the fans would ramp up, some people say it's a fault but IMO it's just how it is with PS3's (otherwise a hell of a lot would be classed as faulty!)

I have heard doing the 'Fan test' causes damage to your ps3, i strongly would not recommend you to open your ps3 up When i didn't i messed up my blu-ray drive from only looking around and getting all the dust out from everywhere.

Fan test is just a case of holding the eject button down and turning the console on at the back (IIRC)

Id give it a good clean out TBH, id worry if the fans wasnt working in a hot enviroment, i took my 60GB apart a while ago, cleaned it up and changed the HSC to Artic silver. Now its very quiet but the fans do kick in (not to max though) after a few mins.

It needs sending back unfortunately, My first PS3 was like this, Sony refused to take it back (saying it was my shelf that was rattling and I should play with it on the carpet) so I took it back to where I bought it from saying it wouldn't play games

My friend's cousin's ps3 was playing fifa one time (40GB) and the fans were on absolute maximum! Literally, it was deafening! :p It wasn't even blowing out hot air - literally freezing cold almost! When we went back to the XMB it went to idle fan status again - deadly quiet. Very strange but maybe this is what you experienced?

How did you manage that?!

Are you sure? I have my PS3 for an hour now and its been fine. I guess my room is just too hot right now. I only got this a few weeks ago, the fan problem only started today.

The replacement ps3 that I got has never hit full speed (fan test speeds) It is usually silent only making a tiny amount of noise even in this stupid temperature,

My first one wasn't noisy at first, but one day I was playing uncharted and it went crazy, after that it started doing it all the time, couldn't watch dvds on it as it was just to damn loud

My refurbished 40gig did that, it was still in warranty so i rang Sony, they asked if it was hanging too, i fibbed and said yes so they said they'd send out a replacement in the next week (this was on a Friday). I continued to use it over the weekend and it did actually start to hang; i assume this was because the heatsink was seated badly.

In short, ask for a replacement if you can, just fib and say it's hanging after playing for some time (as it's likely to begin doing that as my second replacement has only ever spun up once on a really hot day)

Sony told you to play with it on the carpet thats the worst place you could put a ps3.

On my 40gig, fifa09 makes the fans max out as does fght night round 4 demo.. Doesn't on my 60gig.. Other than those above two my 40gig is virtually silent !

My first playstations disk drive failed and my first replacement used to kick straight into full fan speed. So i rang up sony and told them and they sent me another replacement, this is quite until the room temp starts to get up higher. My original playstation was always silent.

The guy at sony when I rang up about the noise it was making said that the fan goes as fast as it needs to and they don't normally replace them because of noise.

It only seems to go crazy when I play games. I've only been playing NHL 3 on 3 Hockey, but when I load that game up, the fans start to get loud.

My 1st replacement used to get loud before I could get to play the game, usually at the language selection stage of loading.
