Ps3 Fan noise

They are in my experience, all 3 of them.

Although noise is all subjective, I can not stand any background noise whilst watching tv/ film or playing games.

Different people have different tolerance levels

You are right, i too have had 3 - a 60gb, and 2 x 40gb and they are loud - not quite 360 levels but thats all disc noise.

Mine is on now with some B-spec and i can hear it over the cricket.

I have a 60GB PS3 which has is based upon a 90nm process.

The 80GB and 40Gb ones were quieter as they were a 65nm process
The PS3 slim is based on a 45nm process and so is even quieter.

The fan on my PS3 gets ridiculous at times. It is a shame I can't use some custom fan profile or something because it really gets stupidly loud!

I have never opened the console though.

It is very annoying when the fan is going full belt when I am playing Tomb Raider 1 or Sonic the Hedgehog 2.

EDIT: Is there anything I can do to shut it up a bit? I don't fancy taking heatsinks off etc if I can help it!

If the warranty sticker was already removed you might have bought a PS3 that already had a YLOD fix done.

What you can do is search for YLOD fix with clamp bending and do the clamp bending part of the guide, it might be a problem that the heasinks are not tight enough making the contact worse than it should be.

hmm but i would have thought a bad contact would = fan speed on full within a few mins, i left it idle in the dash last night and it was fine for over an hr then goes full pelt again. i tuned it off then back on and then its back to slow again. lol!
maybe some sort of faulty speed regulator? anyways i will fit that speed controller and see.

Could be, my 2nd Phat PS3 had an odd problem that was most likely related to a dead temp sensor thinking it was overheating causing it to shut down within one second.

One thing I did notice with my first Phat was that when the fan would spin up it would not slow down when idling, my 2nd refurbished Phat did slow down.

Yea, at first it does push out a lot of hot air, but then after say 3 mins the air is room temp and im like WTF!

Just to update, i have fitted the fan controller and found a nice medium so its now quite and pushing out enough air for me to not worry about.

Maybe i will do some pics for others who have this problem!

I just got done thermal pasting the **** out of my 60GB PS3 after it kept resetting during Red Dead Redemption (and only that game). It works fine but, maaan, is it loud. I'm probably gonna sell up soon, I'm one of those dudes who doesn't wanna have to turn everything up to accommodate the whirring. I love the backward compatibility but PS2's are practically free secondhand now.

Great machines, though, though I do sincerely miss the days consoles were seen and not heard.

my 40 gig "phat" is noisey too

always has been - its aout the same as my Wii

both are in free air - not in a cabinet

Would be interested in some pics of this. My ps3 noise has become ridiculous, yet the air is lukewarm at best coming out the back. Think the temperature sensor is reading incorrectly.

Hi
Now i turn it on and its all fine and the fans are dead quite, I play and complete the dead space 2 demo and its still quite, I then watch a full 30 mins epp of that "come fly with me" and its still quite!
Great im thinking!

Quite

/kwīt/
Exclamation: Expressing agreement with or understanding of a remark or statement.
Adverb: To the utmost or most absolute extent or degree; absolutely; completely: "it's quite out of the question".

Quiet

/ˈkwīət/
Verb: Make or become silent, calm, or still: "there are ways of quieting kids down"; "the journalists quieted down as Judy stepped on to the dais".
Noun: Absence of noise or bustle; silence; calm: "the ringing of the telephone shattered the early morning quiet"

3 in the same sentence, sorry but I had to.
