I'll just throw this right out there... as this is likely the reason.. it's a day 1 fat 60gb. So that's probably why. But is there anything I can do to make it not heat up so fast? I'd rather not take it apart and start changing things because I'm an idiot. It's in a well ventilated place so that's no problem. I just think it needs dusting but I don't know how. Should I just get a slim?

As I have a small bedroom it means that after an hour of playing anything, I'm a ball of sweat. It's also hard to watch movies as the sound of the fans is usually louder than the movie.

Wow this thread is pointless. I don't even know what I'm asking.

Compressed air, although don't do it to close incase it turns to a residue damaging the PlayStation (Also do this while the PS3 is disconnected from power)

Won't that push dust into the ps3? Also, air seems out of stock on OcUK, any local shops I can pick some up from? I don't really know who sells it.

To be honest, you might as well take it apart and do it proper. Compressed air will just move it around and not actually get it out.

You dont have to take it completely apart but just the outside case.

My launch 60gb has started to be a bit louder then usual, but not so loud as to be annoying. I've always had it stood up though to let the hot air rise through the side/top vent.

I mean that you need to take it apart to get all the dust out not just blow it around inside. If your thinking of replacing it anyway then you have nothing to lose.

The fan removes air from the back so that won't really matter.

My PS3 was starting to get a bit louder recently, did a 'fan test' (despite the warnings from some that it can somehow cause damage to the console) and it's been far calmer since. Probably helped to clear out the cooling system a bit.

To the OP, I had a 60gb and the exact same problem, it's on it's way out unfortunately, mine started producing sparks from the rear, try to get a repair/replacement.

Mines always on full fan speed, especially during gaming..

It's a preowned 'fixed' by someone called consoledoctor, I bought it from GAME, and it doesnt even have PS3 logos on the console.

I just assume its always on full fan speed because its been 'fixed' lol

Mine's been doing this recently, and it died the other day. It keeps giving me the YLOD. I've tried the heatgun method and it's not sorting it out.

I have actually fixed another PS3 with the YLOD problem and that worked fine.

Get someone to take it to bits and replace the thermal compound if you are not confident to do it. It's actually not that difficult if you keep a track of where things go. There are plenty of guides in the net. The original thermal compound tends to dry out after a while so use a decent thick layer of something inexpensive like mx2/4.

Oh and you can buy compressed air in sainsburys ;) normally in the section with the cables and blank media.

May have a go at it myself. Just switched it on.. and it's on full power before I even put a disc in. :/

Is "Arctic Cooling MX-2 4g Thermal Compound" from Play for three fiddy a good price?

I also want a new hard drive. And I'm too incompetent to replace it myself, I may just pay ~£175 for a slim and solve all my problems with a smexi new playstation.

You can also force the fans to spin at their max speed to try and remove some of the dust inside your system.

Do this by making sure your console is turned off, then:

1. Hold the eject button down
2. Turn the PS3 on at the back, whilst keeping the eject button held down
3. The fans should spin for a short while then stop followed by beeping. :)
