PS3 fans - weird experiance

My girfriend and I just replaced her little brothers PS3. The old one died of a dodgy hard disk.

Anyways we got a brand new one from the retailer. We were watching a dvd on it last night, and all of a sudden the fans spun up - man was it loud - louder than my 360 loading games, and this was just playing a dvd! I put my hand behind the unit, and felt some pretty warm air coming out the back. We had the heat on and all the windows closed - my girfriend keeps the place pretty hot, so i guess that didn't help, but jeez, is that normal ps3 behaviour?

That's what mine does. I seem in the minority here who unfortunately have a very loud one when playing movies. Mine was clearly audible throughout the Bourne Ultimatum and I have my speakers quite loud, but I've never experienced the same when playing games.

Mine gets very loud when watching a DVD upscaled.

My PS3 is a 60GB, my mates doesnt however, his is the 40GB and it's very cool.

Dont hold me to this, but i think the 40Gb versions have an improved cooling system and use the 65nm chip instead of the 90nm found in the 60Gb versions. Going by Google here, so it may not be true.

The 40GB has 65nm chips, No PS2 graphics chip, improved circuitry. No improved cooling to my knowledge.

I'm not sure the 40GB might have quieter fans which push less air since it generates much less heat than the 60GB model.

All I can say for sure is that my 40GB has less vents than my US 60GB, it kicks out far less heat and is virtually silent by comparison.

think they must use different brand fans . my mates is sat on top a sky+ box and still never gets loud ! could probly cook bacon on it its so hot though :O , tried to tell him hes gunna kill it but he wont listen

60gb model

/\ Thats where im gonna seat mine  The Sky box shouldn't cause a problem because there are no vents on the bottom of the PS3 or on the top of the Sky Box.

I've got a 40gb one that has this problem. Has only happened about 3 times at different times in the movie (from 10 minutes to 3 hours). Hasn't happened for a good while though now you mention it.

I posted my experiences back when the upscaling update first came through.

My PS3 was in the TV cabinet, ie. under the telly.

When upscaling a DVD, the fans would speed up, to a level which made a loud wooshing noise, or "level 3" as we used to call it back then.

As a test, I pulled my PS3 out of the front of the cabinet, and laid it down on the floor. The fans only span up to level one (quiet)

Since then, I purchased one of those little stands, and stand it on its side, away from anything else, and the fans have never spun up to that level again.

Incidentally, as a further test, I put the PS3 back under the telly, and within 10 mins, the fans were making a racket.

So that cured it for me (with 60gb model) just moving to a more open space.

When the fans spin up to level 1, or even 2, which is pretty quiet, it blows more air out the back. If there's an obstruction there, like the back of a TV cabinet, or wall, then the hot air just hangs about. Level 3 makes a loud wooshing noise, and starts blowing air out of the right hand side of the PS3 as well. I used to try this by putting my hands near each of the vents to tell where the heat was coming from.

By moving out beside the TV, and standing on the floor on its side, the fan in the side has never spun up, no matter what game/DVD etc is going on.

HTH

V1N.

EDIT: By the way, the worst noise it ever made, was upscaling a DVD. No game ever made the fans get to this "level 3" or bluray, only upscaling DVDs did it, every time, in around 10mins approx. As I said, and since moving it, it never does it at all.

Thats what im hoping for. I have my TV on a low lying table (really a coffee table) and i have my Sky box and DVD player below it with open space to the sides and out the back, i just plan to remove my DVD player and put the PS3 on the Sky box. Its not in a cabinet or cupboard or anything so hopefully it will stay quiet.
