Ok so I am finally fed up with jittery movie playback from my PC to my PS3. It's crazy. My PS3 is 2 metres from my PC and yet it jitters most of the time. When I stream to the Xbox360 which is in the lounge (10m away and a wall or two in-between) there is not a single jitter.

I want to LAN my PC to my PS3. I have acquired a Netgear 10/100 Hub which is under my desk. I have CAT5 cable from PC to Hub and a CAT5 cable from PS3 to Hub. I have tried to ICS the LAN connection but I still cannot get ICS working.

What am I doing wrong ? What do I need to do ?

to be honest you'd be better off buying a router.

What type of internet connection do you have ?

if you use a hub you'll need to manually assign IP address and subnet mask etc.

I have VM 20mb, but the Netgear hub/router is in the lounge and I've already extended the cable length by 10m and I am not trailing a LAN cable from the lounge across and in to my bedroom.

Whenever I have the PS3 on, the PC is on anyway so ICS is an option I want to use. I tried before with x-over cable from PS3 to PC and that didn't seem to work so then found my old 10/100 Hub and thought I'd give that a go.

You can set up a router to act as a wireless bridge, which would suit your needs perfectly. :)

I'm not much good for helping as far as ICS goes though. :(

It doesn't matter where your PC is in relation to the PS3, seeing as any data transmitted over your network has to go via your router anyway. That's why your 360 doesn't struggle, whilst the PS3 does.

Plug the 10/100 hub into the router.

Plug the PS3 into the hub.

End of configuration.

Or you can do down the horrible messy ICS route to avoid running a cable. I know which i'd be doing ...

So what Homeplugs should I go for ??

I have the Virgin Media 20mb service using a VMDG280 Netgear Hub. What would be a good pair of homeplugs to use with this service. In the future I hope to upgrade to the 50mb or 100mb service when it arrives. Would whatever I buy still suffice then ??

Cheers

My personal experience of Homeplugs has been terrible. You mentioned you're running it across two rooms and a hallway which is something similar to what I did, and got terrible connection speed (using a 200mbit homeplug I was getting 6mbit).

Now others have been luckier and get great performance from them, so I just thought to warn you.

I would personally go for the 200s if you do up your VM speed to 100. Maybe even go for the Gigabit ones? :p

I've seen these Western Digital Livewire 200Mbps Powerline 4-port AV Adapter - Twin Pack for around £70

These have 4 ports so would be ideal for my bedroom with the PC, PS3 and Netbook connected. The other one can run with the VM router and the 360 ? Yes ?

I dont see why not. Are you buying them online? (in case you need to send them back under DSR).

I would be very interested to know if you do manage to get it up and running. I think those WD's sound good.

do you only have one ethernet port on your pc? why not add another card and do it that way?

oh and transfer speeds over the ps3 wifi are awful, i get about 1meg a sec when next to my router and about 400ksec when ps3 is upstairs.

easy

find your pc's local ip address, windows key + r then type cmd and run that.

type ipconfig then press enter.

seek out your ip.

on your ps3

setings>network>internet connection settings>custom>wired>auto detect>automatic>do not set>manual.

Primary DNS is your pc's ip
secondary can be all 0's or the hubs ad.

mtu= automatic

proxy= do not use

upnp= enable

press X

then test.

try that
