PS3 - Fedora Linux installed on a PS3

Seems a brave move by sony considering the implications of it being hacked to play copied games.

On the other hand we could see some really interesting projects being developed for it.

I personally wouldn't use it though, not until it's a seamless transition between OS's. That looked a bit "tacked" on for my liking.

It does tend to be the nature of dual boot - you have to empty the memory of resident application before you can fill it with a new OSs. I have no issue with that, the start up time with the PS3 doesn't seem to be that painful since it is running off ROMs. The start up of Linux isn't really all that bad either since it could hardly be classed as a bloated OS.

I see what you're saying tho, it'd be nice to be able to 'hot swap' the OSs but if there is to be any versatility in the various alternative OS installs then the reboot is the only way (currently) to do it unless you run the other as a virtual machine - not the ideal way to interface with the hardware.

I suspect that linux won't be able to use all the features of the hardware, so you wouldn't be able to use it run copied PS3 games. Saying that, I'm sure someone could find a workaround and use linux to get the system to boot in another mode to run the game.

Careful - this is taking the thread away from the original subject and heading into the dangerous area of using the hardware illegally. Lets keep it on legit conversation.

Well I have read this thread I can't help but come to the conclusion that I can do most of what has been taalked about on a PC.

Email, surfing, gaming, DVD, BD etc....

There's something slightly bizarre about installing Linux on a 600 dollar machine.

Here here, in the old days we used to pull PCs out of the skip at work to do our linux tinkering.

Because it is free? Linux is rapidly becoming as versatile as any other OS out there and a hell of a lot less bloated. Gone are the days when you had to grep and pipe your way around a linux terminal - altho you still can with ease.

You can buy a complete PC package for £399 with TFT and XP already installed, you can run a bunch of free software and security apps on it, because its free doesnt add up until all the kids have bought the PS3 and its available for £150 or less.
