Hi

Attached External HDD with music on but I can not add music to the playlist, it only appears to be for music stored on the internal HDD. My problem is I have more than 60GB HDD of 320KB AAC music hence the external.

am I missing something ? or is it simply not possible ?

I think it would cause problems if the PS3 had to reference media which wasn't necessarily always available. I'd say it's designed to work with the internal HDD only. Same reason why only thumbnails on video show up for files on the internal HDD. I decided to plump for a bigger internal drive in the end.

Just tried it with a USB stick and you are right, no Playlist option appears for the music files on the USB drive. I can only imagine it is for the reason ic1male said.
All they really need to fix this is some sort of playlist support (ie I think 360 supports whatever playlist format media player uses). All they need is to add .m3u support or something, then you could store your music and accompanying playlist file on an external drive. sadly there is a shed load more features I want to see before they do this.
