PS3 firmware update 2.35 is live

PlayStation 3 firmware update 2.35 is now available. According to the US PlayStation Blog, v2.35 is "a relatively minor update to improve stability of some PS3 titles." We're willing to wager a handful of stolen cars that "some PS3 titles" is a better way of saying Grand Theft Auto IV, whose compatibility with older PS3 models has become a topic of discussion and a sore spot for early adopters of Sony's console. An alleged Take-Two email yesterday hinted at a Sony firmware update.

Download now and let us know if the game's technical hiccups (for those that had them) have been eradicated.

Update: As noted in the comments of the blog by Sony's Al de Leon, this upgrade does not fix GTA IV. Said de Leon, "I just want to clarify that this upcoming firmware update isn't related to GTA IV. For those of you who may still have an issue playing the game on your PS3, we have identified a solution that should resolve the issue. You can contact SCEA Consumer Services for support."

Dunno what's up with that, never had any problem with GTA and I have a launch day console.

the patch doesn't work for me I keep getting connection lost at 4% can we download it somewhere?

Also when I check my internet connection settings I get an IP address ok.

Everything was fine until last night :(

PC connects ok to the net as does my Xbox :(

Wanted to play GTA last night on PS3 but couldn't :(

The thumbs of most GTA IV-owning PS3 gamers are probably red-raw by now, their only respite being the game’s inexplicable freezes. So you’d expect the latest firmware update for the console to fix the problem..?

Unfortunately, the answer is no. Al De Leon from Sony Computer Entertainment America said on the PlayStation blog yesterday that the latest version “isn’t related to GTA IV”. But he claimed Sony does have a solution, for which you’ll have to contact customer services, here.

In the meantime, Eric Lempel, director of PlayStation network operations, has said that the latest firmware is “a relatively minor update to improve stability of some PS3 titles”. Sony hasn’t yet indicated which games will benefit from the update - though clearly GTA IV isn't one of them.

Further details about Firmware 2.35 can found here.

getting reports on the playstation forums that IQ in gta4 is crisper but with slightly more jaggies since the firmware update

http://community.eu.playstation.com/playstationeu/board/message?board.id=62&thread.id=750651

I've not read the thread you link to but I've got to call BS on that. Surely a firmware update wouldn't change the rendering methods of a game, this must be a case of a placebo effect where people are over analyzing.

I'll also take this moment to join the crew who hasnt had any freezing problems with a 60gb machine bought a month of so after release :p. Well I tell I lie I had one "crash" when the GTA servers were down and the game decided to freeze up in a cutscene, ever since then theres been no problem at all.

I saw that thread. I tried to take some photos for before and after comparison... but they didn't turn out very well. I didn't notice any more jaggies than there usually are either tbh.

don't own gta4 so can't comment on differences but would it not be possible that a firmware update might contain changes to the way the graphics card driver works? /speculation :) (though I guess it would affect more than just one game of course).

yep, possible, it has already been conjectured on B3D forums that the firmware update has tweaked the GPU and as a result ps3 games across the board are slightly sharper, I'm not saying this is true but it is possible I guess.

True I guess, I thought that after I posted but I still think theres way to much over analyzing going on in this case. :p

If it's worth anything, i did fire up GTA4 after the firmware update and was reminded of how good it looks. By that i mean, it was as if i didn't notice how awesome the graphics were before, but then i did. That was before i found out about this whole crisper graphics thing, so maybe there was something to that.
