whose compatibility with older PS3 models has become a topic of discussion and a sore spot for early adopters of Sony's console. An alleged Take-Two email yesterday hinted at a Sony firmware update.
The thumbs of most GTA IV-owning PS3 gamers are probably red-raw by now, their only respite being the game’s inexplicable freezes. So you’d expect the latest firmware update for the console to fix the problem..?
Unfortunately, the answer is no. Al De Leon from Sony Computer Entertainment America said on the PlayStation blog yesterday that the latest version “isn’t related to GTA IV”. But he claimed Sony does have a solution, for which you’ll have to contact customer services, here.
In the meantime, Eric Lempel, director of PlayStation network operations, has said that the latest firmware is “a relatively minor update to improve stability of some PS3 titles”. Sony hasn’t yet indicated which games will benefit from the update - though clearly GTA IV isn't one of them.
Further details about Firmware 2.35 can found here.
Dunno what's up with that, never had any problem with GTA and I have a launch day console.

I've not read the thread you link to but I've got to call BS on that. Surely a firmware update wouldn't change the rendering methods of a game, this must be a case of a placebo effect where people are over analyzing.
don't own gta4 so can't comment on differences but would it not be possible that a firmware update might contain changes to the way the graphics card driver works? /speculation(though I guess it would affect more than just one game of course).
