Ps3 first impressions and questions

Same, my 40Gb is very quiet and i can hear the fans going up a level after a few hours on it, but its still whisper quiet when it does and this is with TV sound off. Mine is under a coffee table on top of my Sky+ box (its off when the PS3 is on and vice versa).

Common sense tells me this is not a great idea to begin with but im limited on space and will be doing this myself. Any major problems?

I was watching a movie on thursday and around 15 minutes in the fans kicked in at full speed and the noise was certianly louder than my 360 but after another 15 minutes of annoying noise it went back silent again and i never heard it during the movie again :)

usually the fan stays at full speed but this time it didn't(thank god)

Just watched lord of the rings the fellowship extended edition upscaled and not a peep was heard from the fans - i don't think there is a more gruelling task around on the upscaling front.

I wasn’t even sure the PS3 had fans, that’s how quiet my one is. I’ve mounted it horizontally on a glass shelf with sky+ etc.

*60GB Version here*

I've heard mixed experiences with fan noise but most people say it's very low. I've got a 60GB (launch model) and never heard loud noises that often. It all depends on what your doing. Games, blu-ray and xmb is low, dvds is a grade higher. Remember, the PS3 has three or four levels of fan speed.

I'm not overally impressed with the way the PSN works. It's a bit too slow for me to browse around. Hopefully this will be fixed with the "big" update with Home & XMB but we'll have to see. It does its job for now.

My 60Gb turns its fans up sometimes when the room is toasty and ive been gaming for a while, its definitly audible but it was no where near the levels of my old 360 !!

The 40Gbs have a lower manufacturing process aswell so its probably broke mate.

There shouldn't really be because one or the other is off when one is on. There is nothing blocking any of the ventilation holes and there is plently of room at the back to let the air out, more so than a shelf. Heat rises, so im guessing the lower it is the better, just a guess here :D

why? Come on, I know your dying to type "I told you so"... fill us in on your insightfull predictions! :p

What he's said against it is stuff I generally mention quite commonly. That's all. :p. He said he'd listened to people who love the PS3 and he found stuff a different way. I find a lot of PS3 opinions on here clouded in bias rather than honesty, that's all.

You not notice all the posts in here on the contrary to what you say? You think they are all bias?

Hmm, I was really thinking of cashing in my 360 with games etc. and getting a ps3 maybe...Due to it's quiteness and media functions, also the extras of having a blu ray player! A few exclusives I would love to play too, F1 championship, GT5, warhawk etc. What do you guys think I should do?
