I need a bit of help with my step-brother's PS3 that I'm looking at. What will happen is after about 2 hours of use the screen will freeze but the sound continues as normal. Quitting the game and going back to the XMB usually results in the screen going green, looks like graphics distortion (very similar to this).

My initial reaction is over-heating. So I've stripped down the PS3, it's dusty but nothing is blocked up. I'm thinking of blowing it out and putting on some fresh thermal paste. Is this likely to cure it or is there a common fault for this?

It does it in any game and it sits beside the tv stand so gets plenty of air-flow.

Most D.I.Y fixes usually just prolong the life rather than completely cure the fault. You could try cleaning it out and reapplying thermal paste for little to no cost but it will only be a matter of time before the thing goes **** up again. Maybe you could fix it and then get him to sign up to that continuous play service where if your console goes kaput you'll get a new/refurbished one.

Thanks for the advice, it's not actually YLOD'ing (yet..), I was just hoping to get a bit more life out of it! I'll give it a good clean out and new thermal paste (the original stuff has dried right out) and hope for the best.

I'm just going to shove my little question in here - does the new PS3 slim still have an internal power supply? No brick like the PStwo?
