My father is going to America next week and has said that I can have an item of my choice so I am thinking of getting a PS3. Now am I right in thinking that games are region free but movies will not be?

Are there any other downsides to purchasing a ps3 from America?

Warranty
Possible VAT/Tax charge

I am not worried about the tax charge. I don't think warranty will be an issue as i think it will be covered in the UK, I know ipods etc are. In addition to this, its produced by Sony....what could go wrong?

Oohhh... 5 Sony Playstations and 2 Sony Playstation 2s paint their own picture with me. Only had 1 PSP though (but it never gets used).

That's Apple though that make ipods so don't bank on it. I don't actually know if Sony will cover warranty worldwide.

Say you want a PS3 dependant on the warranty, surely he can ask in an official Sony store or somewhere that sells them :)

if not , go for something else :)

I seriously doubt that Sony will cover a US console in the UK - after all, they went to such lengths to stop people from being able to import the things. If it does break - and I agree, we're talking Sony not Microsoft - then I can see you having to ship it back to the States and paying them to ship it back here too (if they will).

Also, why aren't you worried about the import duty? Is your father going to pack it in his suitcase to go in the hold, or will it be carried as an item of hand luggage? High speed x-ray machines won't detect it but a guard scanning and watching hand luggage could very well (and should) spot it and ask where it was bought.

I was wondering about getting one the next time i was over there. Would it be easier to post it back lol? Mark it as books as you dont pay duty on them...

He wont get charged import duty. Hence the lack of worrying.
Is he a pilot or cabin crew or something? I worked for an airline during my placement year at uni, and those guys could bring back pretty much whatever they wanted as they rarely got checked.

I have heard about potential censoring of games in certain countries so that they don't show graphic scenes. Does this affect US PS3's? Surely nothing is too graphic for the yanks. Also, does anyone know where I will be able to purchase blu ray movies for region A?

Don't assume that because Apple offer that sort of warranty that it's the norm, it's anything but.

I doubt very much that Sony would honour a warranty on a US console, especially given I'm pretty sure you're supposed to take it back to the retailer for them to pass on to Sony..?

But What I want to know is, will the console censor certain games? I have read about how some foreign consoles censor games. Also, where would I be able to purchase Region A blu ray discs?
