PS3 game updates

Does anyone else get hacked off with how if you haven't played a game in a few months then you can't just stick the disk in and play but you will inevitably have to wait for the damn thing to update. Happened to me once today, with Stardust and the other day when we had friends over with Buzz. Perhaps the PS3 should have some function where it could automatically download stuff for titles in your library? Shouldn't be too hard?

if you have not played them in a while then surely you could hang on that bit longer for the update to install?

i dont mind them because updates bring fixes and new content to games

You normally don't have to update if you don't want to (but you will loose any multiplayer access until your on the latest version), just click no when it asks you to.

If I haven't played them for a while then waiting 40 minutes for an update that can't be performed as a background download is unlikely to make me want to play it again. It is stupidly un-user friendly.

damn i didnt know it was forty minutes, ive downloaded four diff updates for diff games, they all took 5mins max thats download and install. i see your point now

Can't say it really bothers me, it's not like they take that long. It's also nice to check out any new features or bug fixes.

I agree, the PS3 should have the option to check game updates for games you have installed and allow you to update whenever you want.

Well, after getting the new buzz update you really can't criticize getting free content, however i do agree that the fact the patch can't be background downloaded is a pain.

A steam like distribution system that auto downloads new patches in the background without having to tell it to do so would be ideal. I can understand why that might be difficult to code, so why don't they just put updates on the playstation store as well as auto download when you start the game?

Yes, it's annoying on the PS3 really, but at least it informs you clearly. The Xbox360 does minor updates that take around 5 seconds, but if there is a map pack or something it's down to the developer to tell you on the main page.

I was playing Frontlines a week ago and didn't see any servers because there was a new map released, but the game didn't inform me. I had to do my own detective work.

notifications would be cool actually without the need to boot up the game :)

im al for patches though, bug fixes/balance fixes far outweigh the download time and well... not having them :D
