hi all, apart fro mthe silly fans you can buy and attatch is there any way of cooling down the ps3, i find it gives of loads of heat and the fans dont really do much, was wondering if anyone has manage to do a mod or trick to cool it down.
cheers ali

You don't need to do anything the cooling it has is perfectly adequate.

They get hot because its a lot of kit shoved in a small box including the psu (unlike the 360 and that gets hot enough).
Just turn the central heating off and enjoy your new room heater. :p

If its pushing out a lot of heat, then obviously the fan(s) are doing something (i.e. their job)

If the PS3 itself is getting very hot, then you have an issue.

Fans are doing thier job, if there is heat coming out the back.

Room temp will be a factor too if there is really warm air getting into the console then getting pushed back out again, you are going to get much warmer coming out.

Nothing you can really do to be honest. I would'nt buy one of those 3rd party cooling devices as they are not needed.

The cooling in the PS3 is amazing, especially considering the noise output!

As said above, the output air is meant to be hot.. it's the PS3 itself that shouldn't get overly hot to the touch.

why is my PS3 rather cool then, both to touch and vented air isn't all that warm? are we talking about the 90nm/60Gb models here, cause mine is the 65nm/40Gb (with swapped out hard disk), should i be worried?

If it needed to be cooler, it would up the RPM of the fan. If you have done the fan test, then you would realise that it goes to hurricane speeds. Mine is folding 24/7 and the air is warm, but not hot (40gb version).

Just tried that fan test (turn it off with the switch at the back, hold down the eject button and turn the switch back on) and was nearly deafened! Nice to know it's capable of cooling itself when needed though!

I'm very impressed with how quiet the PS3 is in normal operation, I've got it sat on my desk at the moment as it's plugged into my PC monitor, and I rarely notice it.
