im in need of a new dvd player , ive got a PS3 will this do a good job for playing dvds on?
i can save the money i was going to spend on a dvd player and put it towards a PS3 slim lol :p
whats the PS3 like for playing and upscaling DVDs? :)

I use mine through HDMI and have to say that it's surprisingly bad. I'm not sure what the technical terminology is, but there were those lines across the screen and frames were hanging about (tearing?) and the picture quality was generally questionable. It looked noway near as good as my upscaling DVD player.

Yep agreed, one of the best DVD upscalers out for the price. Some DVDs look almost HD if it's a good transfer.

I found the PS3 great for DVD upscaled to 1080p. I've found good quality DVDs look better than most poor quality Blu-Rays.

It's very good, certainly the best DVD upscaler i've used (but i've only used budget ones and the 360, it beats the 360 as i prefer the interface)

The upscaler is fantastic, although it clearly works the processors quite hard as my fan kicks in noticeably when I watch a DVD...

I would say ensure you get the new ps3 slim.

I hav a launch 90nm ps3 and it gets LOUD at times. Brother has the 65nm 40gb ps3 and it is WAY quieter. I imagine the new slim ps3 is about the same noise level as the 40gb ps3, it is 45nm but it is a lot smaller.

Yea it's strange, the only time the fans come on louder or me is when upscalinh DVDs. Never heard them in games or blu-rays.

My PS3 slim is a great DVD player, upscaling over HDMI. Though my HDMI cable is pretty decent, cheap ones might be worse.

HDMI is digital. As long as the cable isn't super poo then it makes no difference:p

Many highstreet shops have an OK price for the bluray player then try to sell you a £20-50 HDMI cable in order to get their profit:mad:

I have no idea why you're having such a problem, as the PS3 is renowned as being one of the best upscalers for video.

My own personal experience of the PS3's playback is fantastic. Beats hands down anything else I've watched so far.

It's broke.

I've always been well impressed with the upscaler. Sin City doesn't look far off the blu-ray!

Hmm... :(

BluRays look fantastic on it, but DVD has always looked really bad. :s I'll have a look as I just assumed that that was it! :p

Thanks for that guys, it appears I may have got more for my money. :D

It's a release day Slim by the way.
