Hi all,

Does anyone know if it's possible to take the HD out of my PS3, connect it to my PC and read/copy files from it? My PS3 has just bitten the dust and I'm rather concerned about a near 30-hour Final Fantasy X save which I have going at the moment.

Any input would be appreciated.

Cheers!

Yeah as above the PS3 uses a proprietary file system unreadable by PC's. Also if you went to put your drive in another PS3 it prompts you to format it so you cannot access your files that way either:(

In what has it died, is it just the Blu ray drive that's gone or is it completley won't switch on anymore dead?

Three beep-red light problem, possibly a HD problem in itself, but just trying everything I can really...I'm SO not playing through 30 hours of FFX again :D

Only way to get your save back is to get your PS3 repaired by a 3rd party shop, that way you get your own PS3 back, if you send it to Sony you get a refurbished one with a new harddisk.

You would think that they would be able to transfer your data to the new consoles harddisk.
That requires a working PS3 to transfer from PS3 > PS3

The problem is that as soon as you change a harddisk in a PS3 the drive needs to be formatted before using.

I'm pretty sure that smallios74 posted a guide a while back of how to repair the YLoD. I've done a couple now (before the guide came up), and it's pretty simple. The only 'special' tools you'll need are a security torx bit and a heatgun. There's plenty of info on Google. It won't last forever, but it should be long enough to get your saves off at least. My 60gb lasted about 3 months before doing it again. Repaired it again and stuck it on ebay... ;)

I was recently in the same position as you Arterion, only I had god knows how many hours on Fallout 3, Oblivion and Assassin’s Creed 2 save data just stuck on my PS3!

Sadly though, there seems to be no way to recover it outside of the PS3 – I found something about doing a bit copy of the data, which worked; in so much that I got an exact copy of my 60gig drive’s contents – only the new Slim I bought wouldn’t load up until I formatted :(

I did stick a post on an official Sony PS3 forum about the possibility of data recovery, but didn’t get any help really, just people advising the use of the backup tool within XMB – shame the console wont even power up to allow me to do that though.

I’ve still got my 60 gig sitting here, I may attempt to repair it myself over Christmas, I’d like to resume AC2 from where I left it ideally.

Backup, backup, backup! Remember Ken Kutagari's infamous words of the PS3 is a supercomputer. Treat it like any other computer with important files. :D

Thanks for the info everyone, I'll see what I can do myself because the console has an extended warranty, so even if I botch the repair job I doubt I'll have a problem getting a new one (that's assuming they can source another 60gig unit!).

Apopcalyptic, I've seen a couple though wasn't really sure whether to trust it, any chance you could show me exactly which one you mean?

Agreed ;) I'll remember next time. Fortunately, even if I don't get my own data back I've found a FFX save online which is more or less at exactly the same place I am :D

If you try to repair it yourself I doubt you can convince Sony to give you a replacement, opening the case voids the warranty.

If you want to try yourself search Youtube for 'PS3 YLOD reflow'
