PS3 hard drive replacment advice

Sorry to open this old thread again.

My FAT PS3 has died and I am getting a PS3 Slim.

I have downloaded the latest software update onto my USB Stick as I believe this is needed after replacing the hard drive in the PS3 Slim.

I recently fitted a larger capacity hard drive (640 GB) into my FAT PS3 and I am wanting to use this in the PS3 Slim. I believe it is a fairly easy job to replace the hard drive in the PS3 Slim, but I was wondering will the data etc on the 640 GB hard drive work OK with it been used in the FAT PS3 or will I run into some compatibility issues after putting it into the PS3 Slim?

Thanks in advance.

Nope, it'll format, cant transfer drives between systems without it formatting.

Dam , is there anyway that I can backup the data, saved games, videos, games etc off of the 640 GB hard drive, then install it into the PS3 Slim, which would then format it. Then after this, restore back the data, saved games, videos, games etc back onto the 640 GB drive that would be then in the PS3 Slim

Thanks for the help its appreciated.

You'd need to connect a HDD via USB, which you can then back everything up to. You also need to make sure you sync your trophies one last time as well.

It's advisable to delete any files, game installs etc you don't absolutely need to transfer because the process takes quite a while as it is.

The thing is though, the PS3 that the drive was in, is dead. I have removed the 640 GB hard drive in preparation to install it in the PS3 Slim.

Is there anyway that I could install this 640 GB hard drive into a USB caddy, then connect to my PC. If there is, is the data easily identifiable on the drive so as I would know what I was backing up, eg, VIDEO folder (would contain videos), GAME SAVES (would contain game saves).

I won't be able to sync my trophies because the PS3 is dead that the drive was removed from :(

Thanks for the help.

At the moment the answer is no; the data on the drive is encrypted and this hasn't been broken yet.

Only way to get the data is to get the original system working.

Dam that's what I didn't want to hear, so I suppose I'll lose all the saved games, videos etc, not the end of the world I suppose. Thanks for the help anyway its appreciated.

I don't suppose I could switch the PS3 Slim on, then connect the 640 GB to it via a USB hard drive caddy, then copy all the info over from the 640 GB hard drive (I'm sure there is less than 160 GB worth of data on it) onto the 160 GB drive that is in the PS3 Slim already.

Once this is done, remove the 160 GB hard drive (place this in the USB caddie) then install the 640 GB hard drive into the Slim. Then copy all of the info etc from the 160 GB hard drive onto the 640 GB hard drive which would be now in the PS3 Slim.

I'm going to have a belt and braces approach to backing up in light of me losing all the data etc off of my old hard drive.

I am planning on backing up my PS3 hard drive on a weekly basis, maybe all the data or at least the game saves.

Has I mentioned earlier, I removed the 160 GB hard drive that was originally in my PS3 Slim and replaced it with a 640 GB hard drive.

I am going to put the 160 GB hard drive into a caddie that I am waiting to be delivered.

I am planning on backing up all of the info on the PS3's drive or at least the game saves (obviously providing all the info would be small enough to fit on the 160 GB hard drive) I am planning on doing this on a weekly basis.

If I were in the same situation again, i.e. the PS3 would not work, but the hard drive was OK (i.e. as long as the hard drive wasn't the cause of the PS3 breaking).

Would I be able to use the 160 GB hard drive that would be in the caddie to then restore either all of the data or the game saves back onto a NEW PS3 that I would have then needed to purchase?

If all what I have asked is possible, this would then mean that at most I would lose no more than 1 weeks worth of saved game/s progress.

You can restore to any console, but any copy-protected saves would only ever restore to the console which made the backup.

Unfortunately there is no automatic way of backing up just the game saves - you can either backup the entire drive with all data (if you've got a 640gb hard drive in there and only 160gb backup drive this could be a problem very quickly!), or manually copy the saves to an external drive.

With the full backup I don't think it does an incremental backup so each time you're having to do the full thing.

The PS3 could really do with some better save management especially given the complete inability to restore anything should your console die. Cloud saving or a quick backup all saves to external drive would have been great... having just recently lost most of my saves to a YLOD as well it really does suck! :(

I bought the 750gb WD Scorpion Blue from Overclockers. I have it in my PS3 as we speak and it works great. I'm putting all my albums I download from Amazon on it. As my PS3 is connected to my surround sound.

Sorry for reopening this thread but is it is a very useful tool for Ps3 Hdd upgrades. Would it be possible to make it a sticky for future reference?

Anyway, the reason for my post is that I am attempting to install a 320gb 2.5" Seagate drive in my Ps3 (original Fat 60gb - backwards compatible model) and I need to backup everything on the Ps3 to an external Core 160gb Usb Hdd I got from my work. The problem is the Ps3 wont recognize the external drive so I presumed it needed to be formatted to Fat 32. However, when pluging it into my PC (Core 2 Duo 2.8ghz running Xp Sp3) the light on the external drive comes on and you can hear it spin up but it doesn't show up anywhere, either in My computer, device manager or windows admin tools>drive manager. Is it broken? There is no audible chime like when you usually plug in a usb device and I have had no trouble with other usb devices or Usb pen drives at all some of which I use frequently. Can anyone please help?

I managed to fix the issue in the end. The external Hdd was faulty so I returned it and exchanged it for a 32gb Usb stick (which I now use for my Mp3's for my car stereo). I had used about 50gb out of the 60gb on the old internal drive so simply deleted some installs until I got it down to under 32gb and copied everything over. There was no need to install any firmware and once the new internal drive was formatted it was simply a case of copying over my backed up files and re-installing any deleted games. Its all working now and I have plenty of spare space on my new internal 320gb drive. The loading/saving time performance has improved on the Ps3 as well and overal I'm very happy with my new drive. Thanks OCuk :-)
