PS3 HD upgrade..

I'm actually looking at getting a bigger HD for my laptop and had a great thought of using the old laptop HD in my PS3.

It's serial is: wdc wd1600bevs-07rst0 ata

From what i gather its 5.4k (which i believe is best for the PS3 due to heat) but is it a case of any HD works or certain ones?

99% of laptop hdds work in the PS3. Essentially all that matters is the physical size of the drive as some larger capacity drives are 'taller' than normal so they don't fit in the slot.

In short, i think it'll work fine.

You are meant to keep to a 5400rpm drive. Plenty of people seem to use 7200rpm's with no problem and no performance increase.

There is a really, really teeny tiny performance increase when using 7200rpm drives. They were originally pegged as 'to be avoided' due to firmware issues causing crashes. As far as i know these crashes have been resolved, however the performance increases are so utterly insignificant i would still recommend a 5400 just to save some cash.

the 7200rpms also run hotter, so your ps3 will become that little bit more noisy as it tries to cool itself.

Stick with a 5400rpm

buy the best value drive you can. doesnt matter if that ends up being a 7200prm drive, they make no meaningful difference to the operating temperature of the ps3.

come on now, its been how many years and people are still saying these things? As long as its not a taller drive as streeteh said, it'll be just fine

cache is more important to the ps3 then a faster drive and even that is only really for games that use the hdd well.

Nothing, it works already and people have tried it. Games that run solely from the drive perform quite well and installing is much quicker, but it doesn't really help the majority of games which from from disc.

As said, it's been done. Someone (gamespot?) put an article up on what to do and tested the benefits. Conclusion was that it wasn't worth the cost of the SSD for the performance gain.
