I just wanted to make a quick post to say I've replaced the HDD in my PS3.
Well, woopdiedoo you may (or indeed, may not) say, but I wanted to make a comment about the backup system.
Using the search in here, I wanted to be sure that the backup routine backed up EVERYTHING, including full game downloads, demos, etc etc.
Some people seemed to think you'd need to redownload full games, others not.
So, the definitive answer to those people who are thinking of upgrading their PS3 HDDs, but putting it off in case they loose anything..... you don't!
I borrowed a USB2 HDD off a friend.
Created a partition and formatted to FAT32.
I simply went to the backup in the XMB menu
My HDD was about 50gb full, and it took about an hour and a half to backup the HDD! It compressed it as well, and the USB HDD ended up with about 30 odd GB of 3.99gb archive files.
I replaced the 60gb HDD with a 250gb HDD.
I wrecked the head on one of the HDD caddy screws, blimey those things were in tight! Watch out for that. Right tools for the job and all that
(Once I borrowed the correct screwdriver, it was easy)
Replaced with the 250gb drive.
Powered up PS3, it asked to format which took seconds.
I then selected restore from the XMB.
Again, it took just over an hour to restore from the USB HDD.
The PS3 reset, everything was as it was, but with 170/180 odd GB free.
The only thing it doesn't back up is user info. That's stored on flash memory inside the PS3. It makes no difference if you backup and restore to the same PS3, as I did, but if you were to restore to a new/different console, you'd have all your files/games/demos, and have to recreate your logon details.
But yes, as I said, no worries, didn't have to redownload anything. Games, demos, save games, vids, music, photos, all still intact on the new HDD, and working well
For those that are interested, I used this one

I can't hear it, so no worries there.
I've only really played DMC4 since installing it, and if anything, I'd say it was maybe slightly faster than the old 60gb. I never timed anything though, and could just be my mind trying to will more benefits from it
The main benefit though of course, plenty of storage in there, and didn't loose any games/demos from the old HDD.
HTH somebody if they're wondering whether to upgrade.
Just make sure you have a decent, small, crosshead screwdriver before starting. The first one I had was too thin to get a decent grip on. When I borrowed one with a thicker handle, they unscrewed fine, with a crack as they loosened. They really were tight. The blue screw that holds the lot in place was no problem though.
V1N.
