I just wanted to make a quick post to say I've replaced the HDD in my PS3.

Well, woopdiedoo you may (or indeed, may not) say, but I wanted to make a comment about the backup system.

Using the search in here, I wanted to be sure that the backup routine backed up EVERYTHING, including full game downloads, demos, etc etc.

Some people seemed to think you'd need to redownload full games, others not.

So, the definitive answer to those people who are thinking of upgrading their PS3 HDDs, but putting it off in case they loose anything..... you don't!

I borrowed a USB2 HDD off a friend.
Created a partition and formatted to FAT32.

I simply went to the backup in the XMB menu
My HDD was about 50gb full, and it took about an hour and a half to backup the HDD! It compressed it as well, and the USB HDD ended up with about 30 odd GB of 3.99gb archive files.

I replaced the 60gb HDD with a 250gb HDD.
I wrecked the head on one of the HDD caddy screws, blimey those things were in tight! Watch out for that. Right tools for the job and all that ;) (Once I borrowed the correct screwdriver, it was easy) ;)

Replaced with the 250gb drive.

Powered up PS3, it asked to format which took seconds.

I then selected restore from the XMB.

Again, it took just over an hour to restore from the USB HDD.

The PS3 reset, everything was as it was, but with 170/180 odd GB free.

The only thing it doesn't back up is user info. That's stored on flash memory inside the PS3. It makes no difference if you backup and restore to the same PS3, as I did, but if you were to restore to a new/different console, you'd have all your files/games/demos, and have to recreate your logon details.

But yes, as I said, no worries, didn't have to redownload anything. Games, demos, save games, vids, music, photos, all still intact on the new HDD, and working well :)

For those that are interested, I used this one

I can't hear it, so no worries there.
I've only really played DMC4 since installing it, and if anything, I'd say it was maybe slightly faster than the old 60gb. I never timed anything though, and could just be my mind trying to will more benefits from it ;)
The main benefit though of course, plenty of storage in there, and didn't loose any games/demos from the old HDD.

HTH somebody if they're wondering whether to upgrade.
Just make sure you have a decent, small, crosshead screwdriver before starting. The first one I had was too thin to get a decent grip on. When I borrowed one with a thicker handle, they unscrewed fine, with a crack as they loosened. They really were tight. The blue screw that holds the lot in place was no problem though.

Very handy mate, it looks like they have updated the save/restore from when i did mine, i will alter the PS3 faqs accordingly and link to your post if thats ok with you?

I have upgraded 2 PS3 HDD's so far and on both I wrecked the head on one HDD caddy screw. It must be like a right of passge for PS3 HDD upgrading or something.!!!

Bravo. Now you're ready for PlayTV. Hehehe.

I'm undecided on that.

I have a Topfieled 5800 PVR which is brilliant.
If I didn't already have a PVR though, I'd be salivating over PlayTV.

I can't recommend a PVR enough to anybody who hasn't got one.
It totally changes your TV viewing habits, for the better. I never miss anything, I rarely watch live TV, and therefore never see an advert! :)

But yeah, 250gb, very probably overkill, but it was £20 more than the 160gb, so I thought better too much than too little. I'm sure that amount of space should last me the life of the console. Video etc is streamed from a seperate server anyway.

Of course, by all means. If I'd known it was going to be used for something like that, I'd have trimmed it, and written it a bit better ;) but just wanted to put peoples minds at rest, that it does backup everything. That was my main concern before buying the HDD. Didn't want to have to redownload all the PSN downloaded games etc.

I felt my heart sink when I did that. Thankfully I noticed the screwdriver start to slip, and stopped before I totally wrote the head off. I was just impatient and wanted to get it done, and didn't quite have the correct screwdriver.
I can't stress that enough for people doing it, it's easy when you have the right screwdriver. If you don't, the screws are so tight, you may well end up knackering the screws too. After a google, I noticed I wasn't alone.

Yeah all very nice well done. :)

Did the games from my account continue to work (ie USA games not linked to your master account etc). That is the last thing I check before I upgrade mine, as I have used up my 5 licenses!! (I reckon it will be OK, as like you say my console isn't changing, just the HDD)

Although some nice guy on these forums pointed out that for £20 I can buy some software for my 1TB NAS that will let it play nice with the ps3 so may not bother upgrading that if I can get that to work (Although getting the NAS to work looks scarier than doing the ps3 HDD upgrade, in the sense I lose a lot more if it goes Pete Tong!!)

I know what you mean.
I fancy a NAS one day, but for now will continue to use my server.
I bought a 1TB HDD for it this week, at the same time as the PS3 HDD, but it was DOA. Got a replacement yesterday, that doesn't work either!! So another RMA. But, that's another story.

When I recover from paying out for the 1tb and 250gb drive, plus my printer broke this week, I'll look at something like this

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HD-000-QN

It says it supports DNLA.
If I get that in the future, I could take the 1TB HDD back out of the server, and put it in there, for cheaper running costs, but still be able to stream around the house, including to the PS3 :)

EDIT: Yep, as I said, the backup routine backs up all games/demos... everything. So your GT5p still works for example, as users details are held in the PS3 flash memory.

Perfect, now its a case of which to do upgrade *** NAS firmware and install twonkymedia on it or just upgrade the ps3 HDD. The ps3 will be easier I suppose. For the NAS I need to upgrade fimware whicc means copying 1/2 TB of data off it, which is putting me off.

Anyway cheers for the info, knowing me I will splash out and get the ps3 250GB HDD anyway.
