PS3 HDD replacement - u done yours?

So i can just buy an external hard drive, download some HD 'trailers', put them on the external hard drive, plug the hard drive into the PS3 and play it right of it? Sounds very good to me

Also, what is the most common HD format/codec?

I think the most common HD format is .mkv so you will need a bit of software called .mkv to vob to convert it, then just change the .vob to .avi and it works a treat.

You can get other HD media formats which the PS3 supports without conversion, but they are harder to find.

rp2000 knows more abou tthis stuff than me, so maybe he can give you some tips etc. There was an excelent thread about converting HD media for PS3 - I will try and find it.

Yes, just use TVersity or something similar and your away. I have just got this setup and it's so easy to use.

ahhh thank you...... ill read that as well.....

y is everyone slating the ps3 when it seems to be bloody good value? Heck its even good value if u never play a game on it!!

I see, sounds great! Does the HD video lose any quality once you fully convert it from a .mkv to .avi? Also, the PS3 supports .mp4 doesn't it, is that better or worse quality than .avi after conversion?

Im wanting to convert mainly 1080p content and some 720p, so will there be a loss in picture quality?

You dont need to to rename a VOB to AVI well certainly not in my case with using MKV although this might be case for some conversion using MKV2VOB you dont lose video quality.

MP4 is supported by PS3 although im not to clued up on if it is better i dont think so. Program called Gotsent that can convert mkv to Mp4 you can also split them to 4gb if you want also if you have quite big MKV. :) I have used 1080p and 720p MKV worked fine although one 720p hasnt liked playback on PS3 and i copied to HDD on PS3 to test its skipping etc im yet to work out why.

Im using Tversity to stream works great although your need to fiddle with the transcoder to settings you require.

Thats true, but i would like linux installed for light web surfing/ e-mail and to say I can do it. Sad is me......

Linux is also very good if you want to watch normal dvds from any region, without problems (once setup properly, which is incredibly simple & easy) :)

Ive just bought an external drive as I mostly wanted it for music and videos. The space with the console is enough for games installs adn demos, and my 250GB external drive is perfect for videos etc as its easily connected to the laptop. Since the PS3 is capable of playing .VOB files this is perfect for me.

Gonna order a PS3 on Weds now. Convinced myself that it will be the best money spent on electricals for a very long time!

Better start price checking!!

This thread will answer your question better than I can.

Joe do u have a windows Media Centre system?

If you do could you try sharing ** "recorded Tv" folder?
No, XP Pro

i put the 250gb hdd out of a 'sold for spares' laptop that i got off the bay in my ps3 - it works a treat - was very fiddly to get in place but i do admit to being a clumsy oaf.

then i found out that i could use my 500gb WD mybook external drive with it - [mwah ha ha ha] just changed the folders round and i basically have all my pcs media backup available to play on my ps3 and hdtv [not that my 18 month old 28" bravia is much different to my 22" pc monitor]
