Can the ps3 see windows folder shares over a network?
So i can just buy an external hard drive, download some HD 'trailers', put them on the external hard drive, plug the hard drive into the PS3 and play it right of it? Sounds very good to me
Also, what is the most common HD format/codec?

Yes, just use TVersity or something similar and your away. I have just got this setup and it's so easy to use.
I think the most common HD format is .mkv so you will need a bit of software called .mkv to vob to convert it, then just change the .vob to .avi and it works a treat.
You can get other HD media formats which the PS3 supports without conversion, but they are harder to find.
rp2000 knows more abou tthis stuff than me, so maybe he can give you some tips etc. There was an excelent thread about converting HD media for PS3 - I will try and find it.

I see, sounds great! Does the HD video lose any quality once you fully convert it from a .mkv to .avi? Also, the PS3 supports .mp4 doesn't it, is that better or worse quality than .avi after conversion?
Im wanting to convert mainly 1080p content and some 720p, so will there be a loss in picture quality?
Thats true, but i would like linux installed for light web surfing/ e-mail and to say I can do it. Sad is me......
Linux is also very good if you want to watch normal dvds from any region, without problems (once setup properly, which is incredibly simple & easy)![]()
