Hi,

Managed to get my ext HDD formatted in FAT32 (no thanks to Vista...) and backed up the PS3.

Power down, unplug, dust, change clothes (the dust!!), remove HDD.

Sadly since removing the blue screw holding the caddy in place I have progressed no further. The screws holding the drive in are so tight I cannot loosen them - any tips/hints?

Using glasses screwdrivers which seem to fit ok. Any good ideas?

I just used a normal cross-headed screwdriver, you'll get much better leverage than a small one.

Just push it in tight and turn it slowly :o

I actually put my original 40GB drive back into my PS3, and put the 250Gb I had bought to better use in a HTPC - that's how much I needed the extra PS3 space :p

Depends what you use it for.

I've got 100gb+ of PlayTV recordings, and several many more of Films and Music.

Make's me feel how long it's going to be until I have to replace it again. :(

Aye but surely you'd be better off slapping the PlayTV recordings on an external drive and freeing up space on your PS3 for more?

I moved my PS3 yesterday to do some dusting. (i.e. lifted with 1 hand and then put down again). When I tuned it on it said something about the HDD and a progress bar appeared saying "rebuilding HDD database". Thankfully it finished in about 10 secs, rebooted and all looks normal. Scary.

Had you just updated the system software? It tends to say that after installing the update.
