Hey,

I currently have a 40GB PS3 which I am going to put a 250GB HDD into. If I was to later get a fabled 80GB machine (with PS2 compatibility etc.) could I then put the 250GB directly into it without having to do a fresh format? Or is the data on the HDD tied to a specific console?

Cheers,

Suman

Well the firmware is stored within the flash memory on the console and not on the hard drive, so I'm pretty sure as soon as the 80GB system recognised it has a bigger HDD it would want to format it.

All the current consoles do, it's a lot harder to modify the core programming that way.

Hasn't it just made it so that you can now just flash the 360's memory rather than chip it though :p

Still aside from just using ROM and never updating firm ware i guess it's the only way.
