Has anyone got any experience with any of these 2 specific drives, or perhaps lower capacity models of the same drive?

320GB Western Digital WD3200BEVT Scorpio, 2.5", SATA II, 5400 rpm, 8MB Cache, 12 ms £69.59 £81.77
320GB Samsung HM320JI Spinpoint M60, 2.5", SATA I, 5400 rpm, 8MB Cache, 12 ms £65.60 £77.08

I need to upgrade my HDD soon and I don't really buy Hard Drives often enough to have a particular favourite brand/model/series.

Does PS3 use SATA-II, if so that choice in the OP is easy!
I don't think it does but I think it would still work in the ps3. You would not see any speed increase in SATA in a notebook device. They are the really slow end of HDDs in general.
what do u do with the data on your current disk can to transfer it across like on the 360 ???
You use a USB device (pendrive or HDD) connected to your existing ps3, run the built in "bakup" tool, swap HDD, run the "restore". easy by all accounts (I hope!!)

Kinda off topic but... Does anyone know if if I make a new PSN account ("Inazuma"), will all my game saves, data and purchased items be usable on that account?

yeah they will, although game saves may need to be "copied"?

like so (-:

Perfect!!! (a bit of arial font and bold won't go amiss though :) )

On Topic:

I think I am going to get the Samsung as some people have mentioned it may be quieter and apart from that there is no real spec differences between the 2. I will let people know how I get on. At less than £80 it is too much of a bargain to pass up and I have dilly dallied about upgrading the HDD for far too long!!

As always, thanks for all the help in this thread.

What is Heroes

Anyway regarding the harddisk, I doubt there will be much difference, I would get the Samsung just because they were (are) known for their silence and with the PS3 I rate Silence > Speed.

Another point though, if you have 40GB of data how are you going to get that on a USB stick?

I assume you can do it with a USB stick if it is bigger than the amount of data you have in the ps3 internal HDD. I have almost 50GB of data and largest USB key I own is only 8GB (You can get 32GB ones now).

I have a 80GB 2.5" USB laptop drive and a 250GB 3.5" USB drive so will have to use one of those.

I cannot believe you do not know what Heroes is (possibly it isn't big in The Netherlands?).

only read a few lines, I assume there is spoilers in that link.

So if I swapped hard drives and just saved my "save games" Would I have to deactivate that Hd or is the ID thing for each paid game held on the Ps3 its self??

Does that make sense if not let me know and i'll try and explain it better

From my understanding it is held on the actual PS3. Although my licenses are all in use so if when I swap HDDs it doesn't work, then I am wrong!! In which case I will swap back HDD, deactivate, put in new HDD and activate. But I am certain that is not how it works.

Sorry for bringing an old thread up. How did your hard drive turn out? I'm interested in upgrading as well, but very concerned about buying a HDD that won't work or isn't particularly good.

Where there any problems with this Hard drive? or was it plain sailing?

Would any SATA HDD work ok? As I don't think I'll need that much space, I'm looking more around the 200-250GB mark.

Perhaps this or this.

Any suggestions.

I'd be interested as well, I'm sure I read somewhere about some concerns over the 320gb 2.5" inch drives but I'll be damned if I can find it now.

No problems at all. Upgraded to the 320gb drive with no issues at all.

Took about 1 hour to backup data to an external USB HDD, 5 mins swap the disks, and 1 hour to restore data.

Tested all games from all accounts and all game saves/data all intact as well.

(mine is the 60gb ps3 for reference).

Post here if you have any specific questions.

Site I bought my hdd from still sells 3 different 320GB drives for between 70-80 quid. Bear that in mind as the ones you have linked to seem a but pricey to me.

ps3 doesnt recognize sata 2 right? whats the score with SATA 150, 300 etc? I'm a HDD newbie.
Still looking for the best (and largest) 2.5 SATA 7200 rpm drive.

All SATA stuff should not make a difference. There is no way a laptop 2.5 HDD spinning at 5400 or 7200 or with amazing sepeeds could ever match SATA throughput.

Just hype tbh.

Just buy the cheapest SATA(1) drive you can get obviously 5400rpm drives will be cheaper. Some people say you will see faster loading times from a 7200rpm drive, others disagree.

I installed a 320GB SATA1 5400rpm drive and it works fine.

Can someone help me -

If i get a 120GB 2.5" USB HARD DRIVE, USB2.0, SELF POWERED and advertised as working with the PS3 and then make a backup onto it of the PS3 HDD, can i then plug that into my PC and transfer the image or whatever it creates to my PC?

Then take out the 120gig 2.5 from caddy put it into ps3 and format it as my new PS3 HDD (advertised as fitting)

then take the orginal 60gig from PS3 and put into the caddy then back onto PC (be seen by PC?) and then transfer the image back from PC to the 60gig then use that to restore my ps3?

abit long winded but don't want to get another sata HDD if i can use the PS3 orginal, as i can get the caddy and HDD for £45

Should work in theory as they are just flat files in a FAT32 file system. If you want to be certain use Ghost to backup the drives on your PC in case it goes pete tong.

Main issue will be, is this just a caddy with a normal 2.5" drive in it with a generic controller or is a branded one like Iomega/Laie etc that is not menat to be pulled apart? Some of those use proprietry chipsets so you can't just plonk any other drive (ie the 60gb from your ps3).
