hi guys,

just a quick question, i already have a standard hdmi cable ready for when i get my shiny new ps3, but should i also get an optical cable for the audio?

basically i want the best visual and audio my system can muster so is hdmi/optical the ducks nuts or shall i just go from the tv audio out to the amp?

I think HDMI can actually carry a higher bit-rate than optical so if your amp supports HDMI that would be the best option, saves cable too.

I have a HDMI running to my TV and a optical connection straight to my amp. It looks and sounds better than sex - do it.

What AMP are you running btw?

This is the connectivity that I plan to use. HDMI to the TV and optical to the AMP.

As I use the PS3 for DVD's too, I hope this would be the best way to get sound and vision from the PS3...

I've got my PS3 connected to my TV via HDMI and my Xbox 360 connected to the TV via VGA.
The audio for both consoles is done via optical into my Logitec Z5400's and they sound great.
As Streeteh said above, if you have an AV amp that supports HDMI in & out this would be an ideal solution, otherwise optical is the way to go for 5:1 support.

Got a yamaha RXSL100, nothing special, just small and puts out a pretty good sound. Unfortunately it lacks HDMI so never really put any research into what audio quality the medium provides. Optical is fantastic, miles better than any of the analogue inputs.

well thats decided then... my amp doesnt have hdmi so optical it is then :)

i assume any hdmi does the job? mine isnt a ps3 one its just one that i use on my current samsung dvd upscaler...

hrmm i probably talked about this before but ive forgotten:cool:

Problem with using Optical is that you dont get DD 5.1 Bi-linear sound (more instruments than Bitstream) You do get dd5.1 with Bitstream but its a bit less "full" and sumptious.

LOL

James Millar please advise....

I was just thinking that. Cant compare sex and technology :p

Regards an AMP, you dont have to go over the top for a decent AMP do you?

Just to connect a TV, PS3, (CD - Radio Seperators, Maybe), Laptop and as output a decent 5.1 setup.
