Hi All
Just got myself a PS3 and have it connected to my TV via HDMI but when I put on Saints Row 2 the output was only 720p but the game details say it can be 1080p. My Blurays via separate player display in 1080p and so does HDTV.
I went through the PS3 settings but couldnt find anything to set it to 1080p - what have i missed?

Cheers

Not sure about that particular game but plenty of games output in 1080p and plenty in 720p. When you switch the PS3 on, what does the menu display in?

Hi Guys,

The menu displays in 720p and the TV is an LG Full HD thingy. Sorry cant remember exact model but can check when home tonight and put it up.
TV does support HDMI 1.3 that I do remember

Well that's the problem there, it should be in 1080p. With the PS3 switched off, hold the power button for 2-3 seconds and it should beep and then start up in a low resolution, 480p I think. It should then say something along the lines of HDMI/1080p detected do you want to use it yes or no.

Yeah checked that last night that it was on autodetect, thats why thought i might have missed something. PS3 didnt have a manual when i got it so been a bit trial and error going through the various setup and options.

You can also manually select 1080p as a possible resolution in the PS3 options, most likely the previous owner had a 720p LCD so 1080p was unchecked as a resolution.

Hey Guys
I did the reset thing by holding down the power button and it detected my HDMI and set the resolution to 1080p for the menu. Just fired up Saints Row 2 and the game is still at 720p

That is a different issue, most likely the game is made to run at 720p and is compatible with 1080p LCD's (meaning you can run the game on them but in 720p)

Not all games can be upscaled/forced to 1080p and my experience is that if the game is made at 720p it's best to run at 720p and leave the scaling to the LCD.

I'd say about half of games use 720p although newer games tend to be 1080p more and more. When I first had the PS3, I read up on how you can un-check 720p and other resolutins to force certain games to run in 1080p but I soon realised it makes almost no difference. Only a very small handfull of PS3 games actually render in 1080p, the other 99% are upscaled.

What other games do you have? if you give a quick list and there is a game I have that I know outputs in 1080p, you could try it on yours. If that runs in 1080p then you know everything is as it should be.

Cheers mame, I have
COD Black Ops
COD MW2
Baja Edge of control
Virtua Tennis 3
Ultimate Alliance
Saints Row 2
These are the one that state 1080p on the box

If you want to try if the game runs at 1080p you need to uncheck 720p as a resolution.(keeping 576p and 1080p checked)
If the game runs at 1080p it will work at 1080p, if not the game will run in 576p

After seeing how good Uncharted 2 looks in 720p I stopped trying to run games at 1080p and have all resolutions checked, if a game is 1080p it will run at 1080p and if a game is 720p it will run at 720p.
