I was just wondering do you have to use specific PS3 headphones, or can i buy generic usb headphones?

Also what are good brands and models?

the little dongle type thing you have wont work im sure of it .
most single usb headsets just plug in and work the best bluetooth headset is the official sony ps3 headset which lloks like this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:PlayStation_3_bluetooth_headset.png most places have it for around 25 pound its the only bluetooth headset with HQ mode .
this is the new official usb range 4GAMERS CP

there are three available the cp pro,cp nc1, cp nc2 which is the better one they used to retail from 40 to 90 pound but if you look now they have dropped in price .
the nc2 which looks and is the best out the lot can be had for 35 quid bargain think i might order 1 myself now :D
They have adjustment for game and voice output and good noise cancellation but it uses

but this is on the way looks a bit pricey though out later in the year http://www.techradar.com/news/gaming/sony-releases-official-wireless-ps3-headset-960419

Do you want to soundwhore? I'm a competitive PS3 player (sounds like I'm boasting but I am :P) and all the 'top' players use Astros or Steel Series Siberia V2.

Astros are 100 quid, and you need a mixamp for them to work well which is another 100.

There are 2 versions of the SSSV2s (Im gna call them V2). The normal 35mm jack ones and the specific PS3 ones. I got the normal 35MM ones and need a USB soundcard (as you got in pic). Green pin plugs into TV and pink pin plugs into USB soundcard. The downside is that you have only stereo sound and not surround. To get them to surround, you need a mixamp, but i heard it doesn't make a HUGE difference. The PS3 version is new and solves the USB souncard issue AND the stereo/surround issue so you can use the headset on surround sound without a soundcard.

The price is a bit higher than your budget. Cost around 80 quid (they're on OCUK, but not sure about the PS3 version) but are VERY good.

Other people go for Turtle Beach, Trittons, Shakaroons (sp), Astros (as mentioned) or even Seinheissers (sp) and buy a cheap clip on mic.

If you ask me, for your budget, go for the PS3 v2s. Quality headset with surround sound and built-in mic.

EDIT: Forgot, if you want to turn the 35mm ones surround, you need a mixamp (as stated before) or SS USB soundcard, costing around 30 quid. Once again, this problem is solves with the PS3 version of the v2s.
