Appoligies if this is in the wrong topic im not sure if it should be in the home cinema and hifi section.

Parents recently purchased a full HD 50" panasonic plasma T.V so i decided to buy a PS3 (as wanted a blueray player) i mainly play call of duty 4 online and a bit or pro and tekken5. Im addicted to COD4 online and my parents wanted to watch T.V so i decided to take my PS3 upstairs and plug it to my 42" panasonic plasma screen (TH-42PWD6). I only have a SCART Component board and monitor input on my screen so i conected the supplied component cable which came with the ps3 to the SCART slot on my screen via the supplied component/SCART adaptor. I was shocked at how poor the image quality was, i wasnt expecting it to be any where near as good as the quality of the downstairs t.v but this was truely atrocious. I used to have my 360 conected to my 42" plasma and the picture was fine. What im asking is should the picture quality realy be that bad if playing the PS3 on a non HD t.v? Im sure this is not the case so is there anyway of improving the picture quality i.e is there a PS3 to monitor input cable and would this improve the picture quality?
Any ideas

There will be a big difference between the HD TV when connecting through a Scart lead as that would be an SD input. I would think as you said you're TV has a component input you would use the component lead that came with the 360. if so the component will give you a far better picture than using scart or composite cables, You could always use the PS3/PS2 component AV lead, this is not the same as the one that comes with the PS3 as thats composite. You can get them from most gaming stores for under £10 as like i said the PS2 ones will be fine if they are a bit cheaper. There is no PS3 monitor lead either d type or DVI, it can be done using converters, I think theres a few PS3 users who do this, but im not sure how good or how cheap they are.

Yellow/White/Red plugs to the Scart adapter? That's composite video - not component. The lowest quality video connection!

Generally speaking, HDMI > Component > RGB Scart > Composite Video

It would appear some people are not reading the OP, he is plugging into a 42" NON-HDTV as far as I can Gather anyway (please correct me if I'm wrong[I very often am {see other threads for details}]. So HDMIis defo out, does the PS3 have a similar setup to the 360 where you need to switch it to a SDTV mode??
