PS3 Improving PS3 visuals

I've been using fullrgb since it became available in a firmware update.
Definitely improved image quality here.

V1N.

EDIT: Not sure if it works on all TVs? Most modern ones would I guess. I'm running the PS3 on a Sony 40w2000

Some Older HD TV's won't support it. But most new ones will, And as said. It definitely gives a slight improvement. I wouldn't go as far as leaps and bounds though

Wouldnt recommend super-white either, (though i am using a Dell 2407!) found it way too bright and washed out. Obviously depends on your TV though!

Quite.

I tried it with Ninja Gaiden at the time.
Tried it with limited, and full RGB, and could definitely see the colours were more vibrant. Had to recalibrate my brightness setting a fair bit though, as it made the picture a lot darker. When I set it right, the blacks were still oily black, but the colours stood out noticibly more.

Not essential, but if you can improve the IQ a bit, then why not :)

Super white works fine here.
I also have an option for Super-White in my TV menu, which I think I only have set to low.

I think the best opinion I can give for improving PS3 picture quality, is to ensure you have your TVs set to 1:1 pixel mapping.

Nothing to do with the colours of course, but when I first got my TV, and in anticipation, loaded Ninja Gaiden up, to see it in its full 1080p glory, was quite disappointed to see jaggies.

Went to my TVs HDMI setup, found 1:1 pixel mapping, enabled it, cleared the jaggies up.

Worth doing, as I bet a lot of users (though probably not those who'd be participating in these forums) don't know to enable it.

The video claiming The Darkness is the same on 360/PS3 is nonsense. The textures on the PS3 version are terrible compared to the 360 :o

I stumbled on the Full RGB thing a while back when messing around.....Noticed the difference right away, so obviously left it that way :D

I started out with an open mind, but then they said The Darkness looks the same side by side with Xbox360 and even the most ardent PS3 fanboy can see that the PS3 version looks awful in comparison.

From what I understand your TV needs to support it, otherwise a lot of detail is lost in the darker areas.

For example, if you stop the video at around 2:32 in the middle of the soldier you'll see that his belt/coif just becomes a mess of black with full range.

However, a lot of people seem to prefer the setting even with older TV's, so I'm guessing it also benefits TV's with poor contrast ratios.

I spent quite some time calibrating my TV after selecting fullrgb.

I boosted the brightness a fair bit, to bring it back to the point where the blacks stay as black as possible, otherwise I too lost detail in darker areas. I posted some screenshots back at the time to show what I meant, just with static pictures. Recalibrating the TV sorted it for me though, and definitely made the colours look better.

Full RGB works wonders, you can immediately tell the difference on the menu you pick it from. The black of the background becomes more black, and the white of the font seems more luminescent. In games, the colors are very vibrant, it is like the console did a decent job with the contrast.

edit: obviously it can't compensate for poor multiplatform release graphics, like silly techbugtv think it does. I've seen Darkness graphics first-hand (I was the one who posted the comparision shots here a few months ago), it's more than 'washed out'. Software issue and not hardware issue there.

That video was tosh. They could have achieved very similar results by simply reducing the brightness. Full rgb may improve things slightly - I use it with my projector - but after it's enabled you'll have to adjust the brightness accordingly, which they didn't.

Mine was never washed out in the first place and whilst I admit, the new settings made a difference when I originally chose them, it wasn't as drastic as some people were/are making out.

I don't understand why they aren't on by default though.

I'd wager that if you calibrated your set to both limited and full rgb you wouldn't be able to tell the difference between them. More likely that at full rgb the picture is simply darker.

It doesn't just make the picture darker it expands the colour range from 16-235 to 0-255, so as well as darker blacks the lighter areas would also be lighter making overall contrast better, that's why the image looks less "washed out" using full RGB.

A TV that supports full RGB should have a setting in the menu to get the best out of it (so you wouldn't need to recalibrate the brightness etc).

I appreciate how it works, but have also tried it on 3 different sets and noticed very little difference once the brightness levels were set up properly. Granted, neither had the full rgb option, but afaik they all supported it. I still suspect most people notice a difference because they haven't adjusted their brightness correctly.

Hi Vin,

I have the the same setup as you. I can't find the 1:1 option though? Do you have to select custom for the options to become available?

Also are the RGB - Super White - and 1:1 all the settings that need to be changed for best quality or are there more? Also do i have to change them on the TV aswell as the PS3?

I haven't changed any of the display settings on either the TV or PS3 since i first turned them on.

Thanks very much,

Aaron :)
