I'm thinking of putting my PS3 in a cupboard in my side unit to keep it out of the way and tidy the space up. Will I need to open the cupboard door to play or does the PS3 not get too hot? Also, will a 1cm thick side board door cause any issues with the bluetooth controllers?

I open a panel on my unit when I play otherwise the fan goes into over drive, makes me think it will burst into flames.

Unless the doors are made of lead you'll have no issue. You can control a PS3 from the other side of your house usually. Just keep an ear out for the fan straining. Also keeping it in a cupboard may help with dust (dust the cupboard thoroughly first).

You don't really want to leave it completely closed off, otherwise it's just going to be recycling the same warm air.

Cool. Thanks guys. I've got a media pc in the cupboard now which we have to leave the door open when using. If I put the PS3 in there ill do the same.

Not PS3, but my 360 lives in a cupboard. It got really hot, so I took the back off the cupboard and braced it with some metal rods from Ikea. Could work for you, depending o the cupboard.

Good idea. If it is to be a permanent home then cutting a big hole in the back of the cabinet to let some air flow would be good. Also a place to thread the cables through. Watch for dust though as backs of cabinets are dust magnets (or at least mine is). Maybe some sort of DIY dust filter made from a pair of tights I you're serious.

OOH! Furniture Case Mods! That sounds awesome. Maybe rig some cathode tubes to light up when the door opens :)
