Ive taken xboxs back form the USA (UK one wont work there due to power and NTSC) and Ive taken my UK Xbox to Korea with me (where it currently lives right now). Both times i put them in the hold in the middle of a large suitcase.
Never had any problems but some airlines specifically say they wont replace them if they get smashed (Korean Air for example).
